i have the tmaxx 2.5r what is the difference with the 2.5r and the 2.5. also has traxxas discontinued the 2.5r? why does the 2.5 have a larger spur gear than the 2.5r? are the trannys different?

Not sure about this, just a guess. Cooling heads are different for the 2.5 and 2.5R engines. 2.5R appears just be an upgraded version. The 2.5R probably has a different spur gear to adjust for a different RPM rating.

Pottsgroverc is probably right on this one. But for most trucks, you can change the spur and bells to make the truck react differently. eg: if you go to a smaller spur and a larger bell gear(usually you change both at the same time, go up by 2 teeth on spur, you go down by 2 on the bell) This will give you a higher top end, and if you go the other way, larger spur and smaller bell, you get better bottom end, faster take off....

So..being it has a smaller spur, is because the motor itself has a lower output, so they want the truck to go faster.

Does that make any sence?

The 2.5 and the 2.5r engines are the same except for the head, I've had both of these motors and the only diff. is that the 2.5r looks cooler.

I have no idea y the spers are diff.

But the trans on the trucks should be the same.

if you go to the traxxas web site (http://www.traxxas.com/products/nitro/maxx/tmaxx33/trx_tmaxx33_specs.htm) and it says that the 2.5 , 2.5r , 3.3 have different gear ratios is that because of the spur and the clutch or is it the tranny???

on traxxas website
1. go to products
2.click on the t-maxx
3. then go to the part to where it says specs
this should tell you the gear ratioes for all three trucks.

The trannys between the two 2.5's may have a different gear ratio. There are several paths to the same ratio. The 3.3 will be different, apples and oranges here. Faster motor, different gear ratio on a different platform.

the r in 2.5r stands for racing. I know this because I the guy that bought my t-maxx 2.5r.

The 2.5 R. R does stand for racing. The head is larger on the R...Why? do you ask...It is because the R is a much hotter engine. It is more powerful and runs at its best at a slightly warmer engine temp. You can run it a little leaner because it is a better (performance driven) engine. Yes it does look cooler, but it is defanatly more fun to bash with than a regular 2.5. My 2.5 R makes all the racers mad at the track, they run picco and OS and I can beat them around all areas of the track. I love it. And one other thing, the 2.5r is not obsoleate. You can get it through traxxas or you lhs should have it also.
