Hey guys! I just orderd my first airbrush and I'm trying to set up a workbench in my basement. I have plenty of room, but would like some ideas. If you guys don't mind take a picture of your rc work area and let me know how you like the set up and what you would like to change if anything. I'm starting out with a large desk, like an old teachers desk, I know I need shelves and peg board, but what else? Thanks for any help you can give guys! Mike

Ok, this is my livingroom/workshop, you will notice, NO couch!
Its a little messy at the moment, but I do most of my work at my desk so I have easy access to my pc were I have files for all my trucks manuals.
The shelves and bench are from HomeDepot and they come in two sections so you can stack them and the selves are wood, great for soaking up spills and fuel.
The peg board is mounted on a 1x3 frame thats screwed to the wall and I have a power bar from a server tower strapped to the bottom of the peg board.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t180/Taqrin/DSCF0001.jpg
I'd like to add a couple more sections of peg board so I can hang more parts and another section of bench to bring it right in to the corner of the room, also a few more light to help brighten it up more.
The coffee table also doubles as a good work area, I spread a couple felt cloths over it and its great for laying out parts as I'm working on my trucks.
When I'm doing my painting and airbrushing I hang a piece of plastic over my pegboard as to not get any overspray on all the parts and the other pc monitor.
Just so you know, my g/f doesn't really like not having a livingroom, but hey! ya gotta work someplace.... :D

WELL I RENT A HOUSE RIGHT NOW SO MY INDOOR SPACE IS LIMITED AND WITH 3 KIDS THEY TAKE UP ALOT OF SPACE. THIS IS MY INDOOR SETUP AS YOU CAN SEE NOT TO MUCH TO WRITE ABOUT BUT IT GETS THE JOB DONE . I DO HAVE A BENCH IN THE GARAGE BUT IT IS FAR TOO COLD RIGHT NOW IN ILL. AND IT IS NOT HEATED. BUT I FIGURE THIS IS NOT A BAD SETUP SINCE I GOT BACK INTO THE HOBBIE IN LATE JULY. I TOO HAVE A AIRBRUSH ON THE WAY AND HAVE A FULL BOX OF FASKOLOR PAINT BUT MOST OF THAT WILL BE DONE IN THE GARAGE . THANKS AND GOOD LUCK

Very nice tearemup...........Nice clean and simple set up you got there.
I like the little shelf on the desk, and the peg board is a good cool too.
I keep all my tools/spare parts/starters/glow ignitors ect ect in my tool box, that way there is less packing up for a day of bashing. Easy to get at when I'm wrenchin and all I have to do is wheel it outside and throw it in the back of the truck and I'm off.
Oh............I wonder how long that bench will stay clean and organized...lol.

i just started expanding my workbench...working on the dodge and some other projects, i was completely running out of room. So i took on another project and am expanding work area from 24 to 48 square feet, adding some shelving, new lights, etc. I'm even running over some cable so i no longer have to choose between watching nascar/football/mythbusters and working in the shop. :) I got the bench built up today, hopefully shelves and paint tomorrow, and re-organize everything hopefully by friday. I'll get some pics up when done.
In the meantime, I have defintely decided i am better with RC than carpentry.

ok, all done! for now anyway, got a few odds and ends to take care of. We got about 4" of rain yesterday and the basement took on some water - not too bad, but slowed things up a bit. you can see some still on the floor. it just seeps out of the walls a bit, but something i have to address.
anyway, expanded the workbench and added some shelving and what not. i only bought 1 sheet of plywood, the rest i just used leftover wood laying atound the house. Function over form! i lowered it to a seating height, added a TV, a place for my whiteboard and corkboard, hung some tamiya box art and it's starting to look like home! i now have a ton of room to work on projects.
on the other side of the basement, i have another table for my grinder, drill press and bench sander, and a large rack of tires. :) didn't know where to put them and that side is still in chaos till i get it completed. I have a large fold out table that i use for painting as well.
Hope this gives you some ideas!

I really need to get something going on a work area. My wife still points out the paint I got on, the sctatches I put in, fuel and grease I got on, and the holes I accidently drilled into the dining room table. Yup, My area is about to get me hit in the head with a frying pan.

At least your stuff got home dry. I had to throw my stuff in the back of a pick-up truck with no cover and I think the rain came down 10x harder as we left Motorama. I will say my Revo was pretty clean after getting power washed for 4 hours on the ride home. Needless to say little WD-40 was necessary.

Yeah it was pouring down rain when they opened the doors around 8:00 pm on Sunday. It was very foggy the way home also. I used to pack everything in totes and lug it back and forth from my truck to my shed but it got to be a pain so now everything stays in my trailer and I just hook it up at the house and work out of it at home also.

well my wife and i came to an understanding. i don't use the kitchen table and i could dedicate an entire room to rc. but the room in question had no walls and just a few well spaced planks as a floor. now things have changes and the room is coming together. i'm almost done now. just a little more left to go before its all finished up. but as you all can tell i will have made full use of the space when i'm finished.

i agree but they are all i had. told the wife last night that i want her to make me some speed racer or some other style of racing curtains. i'm not holding my breath though. :D
anyway before i started on the room i thought about how great it would be for me and my son to work on rc cars together. he's only 4 right now but it wont be long before he is ready to race. so i figured i would go ahead and get everything set up before that time comes. (this way i have the extra funds to cover all the broken parts in his future.)
now currently the room is a bit bare but as we all know it don't take long to get over loaded with equipment. i don't think i will be filling the room to the point that i need more room anytime soon though :)
thanks for the comments!

very nice setup! by any chance do you race a lot of oval?
honestly i have never ran oval. i have always stuck to offroad.
the bolink outlaw sprint car was picked up in an ebay lot which i was buying for a rc10. the bolink was going to just be a parking lot basher until the day it arrived. that's when i found out it had never been ran. so i picked up a body and wing, changed the black front bumper for a nip chrome one, and swapped out the whit wheels for a nip chrome set. what i ended up with was my first shelf car that wont do anything but sit on a shelf in the shop and look pretty.
now if your referring to the sprint car body mold sitting on the little table in the center of the room well... i am working on learning vacuum forming so i can design my own bodies. i had a sprint car body laying around, so i used it to case my very first mold for vacuum forming practice. once i get the basics down i will move on to trying to design a few bodies. and just think of the near endless supply of rear wings i will have. seeing i spend the percentage of a race upside down my wings don't tend to last very long lol.
i figure if i have a couple rc cars of each type i can be pretty flexible when and if things change at my local track. but offroad is my main interest. which in a couple years my backyard (the whole thing) will be converted to a 1/10 scale off road track. that way i may be able to get in enough track time so that i wont need to replace as many wings.:D

ya talkin about my wife's smut books? lol the room next to the rc room is a library i setup for my wife. 2 1/2 walls floor to ceiling are shelved in there for her books. i got tired of tripping over them all the time so i had to figure out something for her to do with them all. and in order to get the pic that included the end of the workbench i had to stand in there. so even though the rooms are next to each other they are different rooms.
what part of hooser-land are you in? im done here on the ohio river myself and will be racing at p&t hobbies in mitchel after i get my batteries.

roadrunner. I have that same Dremel. I love mine, how do you like yours. It is nice to not have a cord wrapping around stuff or limiting your area of operations.

its actually quite organized. truck parts in the middle of the bench, tires in the back, what im working on floats to the surface, and the top drawer in the tool box is all project parts.

it is wonderful. though broken. no lipo cut off, stall protection, and works either on, or off.

Little life to an old thread...
The basement is my RC zone....only place I have where I can store 18 years of stuff. Got a fridge and TV, and I can disappear down there for hours. :) Come along for a tour! (don't mind the mess)
Table to the right of the workbench, holds my bigger projects. Baja, Revo 3.3, Monster Mo and one of my slashes hiding in there. In the back, parts racks hold all kinds of odds and ends.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws001.jpg
Main workbench area 8x11, 3' deep....more parts bins, field box with tools, current projects, motors and electronics...everything i need for running cars. Wawa coffee....you guys in the NE would understand.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws002.jpg
Where all the magic happens.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws003.jpg
other side of the workbench, styrene and scratchbuilding stuff, noteboard, battery area.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws005.jpg
Building supplies, oils, lube, radios, paint....it's all jammed in there somewhere.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws006.jpg
Drafting table for designs, and detailing and another parts rack buried back there. Monstly nitro stuff in there as I don't run nitro much anymore. Collection used to be 75% nitro, and have really come back around to electric.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws007.jpg
Bigger tools for scratchbuilding.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws008.jpg
truck rack...mostly scaler projects on this side. Fridge full of cold beverages.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws009.jpg
Another car rack...All different kinds of stuff pile here. T-maxx in a box, lower left.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/ws010.jpg
Not pictured...entire rack of tires (in the background of the last pic), 2 baja sized boxes under the workbench filled with chassis/old kit parts, and a pallet filled with bodies. RC bodies that is....:):)
thanks for coming along!

On a multi-tasking day:

Wider view of my basement workshop:

I've got a shelf on the opposite side along with a drill press, but forgot to turn around and take a pic of it (its too messy anyhow). I also use my garage as a workshop but its winter now and its too cold in there...
Basicaly like my basement

1 year later....updates everyone! Where do you spend your RC time?
Spent 7 hours today rearranging, cleaning and making it presentable. 3 trash bags and a forest of old boxes later, here's what I got. Not done yet, need another hour or two, but exhausted and calling it a night:
work area: 2 3x8 tables...TV in the corner is coming out since it's old and no longer gets 1/2 the channels and a small flat screen is going in. Stealing it from the bedroom while the wife is away tomorrow...SHHHH!!! Maybe she won't notice.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010002sm.jpg
Organized most of my parts that I use regularly...
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010003sm.jpg
other side of the bench - here's where I need to finish.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010004sm.jpg
Another work table/battery area...opposite my bench, can just swivel around and work...need to organize it yet. Was piled 3 feet high with crap a few hours ago.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010005sm.jpg
Cars, trucks, and projects. About 2/3 of my collection. Have a few others scattered around the house, 1 at work in my office, and the baja is out in the garage
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010007sm.jpg
Monsters and random junk
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010008sm.jpg
bodysets and odds and ends for future projects. Note the Revo on the fridge, totall forgot it was there till i saw it in the pics..will put it on the monster rack
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010009sm.jpg
Tires...need to sort this mess out. Have at least 150 tires piled in here. I have no idea why.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010011sm.jpg
This will be filled tomorrow once I get the tires sorted out....Complete Fox in there that just needs to be assembled. Shelf queen, going in the office.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/workshop/09252010010sm.jpg
Under the workbench is about 30 lexan bodies and 6 big boxes of old and random parts. I never throw anything away really :)

Nice work area oldschool, If I had an RC area like that I would probably wouldn't leave. That is a lot of tires you have, I really like those big tires on the top shelf on the fourth and fifth row down, do you know what kind they are?

yeah, if i had that kind of setup and didnt have to worry about money, i could and would simply waste away in that room
i need to do the same in my room, my stuff is all over the place

Old duratrax V-spike tires for the clod. They are long out of production, but they come up on Ebay every now and again. Rock hard tires.
Thanks guys - if it were not for that whole pesky job thing, I'd never leave either! Wish I had a nicer spot than the basement though.
