View Full Version : Dumb newbies don't know anything...

Ok, so it's true, I'm a newbie, and I don't know much. I don't have a lot of money, but I was bitten by the nitro rc bug again (it snuck up behind me and bit me before I could step on it. Dumb thing.) Anyway, I was going to go with a stadium truck, but the more I look at buggies, I'm thinking that one of those looks like a lot of fun. It would just be for bashing and all, we don't have a local track, but long ago when I had a Duratrax, I found out that our local BMX track worked quite well for bashing. Anyway, I don't want to make the mistake of duratrax again, but would really like to get a buggy to bash. Is there a decent one that can be had for under $300? Something with a high availability of aftermarket parts would be great, as we don't have much for hobby shop's around, so whenever something breaks it would be great if it were an easy part to find. Thanks for the help.

Just my 2 cents....

Buggies for bashing are less desireable than a truggy. Ground clearance hangs up buggies quicker in deep gr**** etc...

A good buggy will cost more but require less upgrading than a budget $300 buggy.

A lot of guys have good luck with Ofna's and TTR's for less-than-full-race buggies. Sportwerks Mayhem is also popular and doesn't suck.

I still like the Thunder Tiger ST1 truggy (around $350) for a good entry level truggy with full CVD's and a decent suspension.

the LX one is way over his price range...can it be electric?? if so, traxxas bandit is the answer. It shares MANY of the parts with the stampede and rustler, so it has very good parts support (im talking about getting the XL-5 version, not the VXL considering price...) for 4wd tamiya dark impact is a good buggy, im not sure about rtrs tho...nitro i'd say go with a sportwerks turmiol or wait a while for the new kyosho buggy, the DSX i think it is...

How is the LX One way over his price range exactly?

It's $289.99 RTR on Tower with $25 off right now. Thats only $264.99! It even comes with a glow starter and fuel bottle. For $300 he has everything including batteries and fuel to get started.

Buggy has great part support, bunch of hop ups.

I would take an 1/8 scale nitro for bashing at a BMX track anyday over 5 bandits... Things are built for way more abuse. Granted a Truggy might make a better basher, an 1/8 scale buggy isn't far behind.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. I would really prefer to go with nitro, so that rules out the Bandit. I'm still trying to decide after that. The Ofna looks pretty good, I hadn't looked at it. I'm still torn between the Ofna LX One, the Kyosho DST, or the Associated RC10GT2. The associated would probably have the most parts availability, but for the same price as the the Ofna, wouldn't 4wd be better? The Kyosho DST is quite a bit cheaper, and I haven't really heard anything bad about it, but I can't find much for parts for it anywhere, so that could be a problem. Is there any truth to 1/8th's being a lot tougher than 1/10th? Lastly, does anyone happen to know about what ground clearance is on the Ofna? Most days, the places I go it's not going to matter, but in the summer when I spend a lot more time in the mountains, it may come into play some. Thanks a lot for the continued help.

RC10GT2 is not a good basher truck...great race truck, though!

lol, in that case there are a whole lot of 4wd buggies that are good. The sportwerks turmoil sounds like the best choice for you, but Ofna, AE, Kyosho, Himoto, and CEN make some nice biggies as well

Does CEN racing have that great of stuff? I first started looking at some of their stuff, but it looks like most everything they make is plastic, and has plastic chassis and stuff, and it's one thing to break an a-arm or something, but something totally different to break a chassis.

CEN racing is AMAZING!!!! (minus their mini series) i have driven the tx arena, GST 7.7, and about 5 other and all were fantastical...

Just from some one who races and has learned what to bash and what to race! The Buggy and truggy --sure you could bash those vehicles no problem but really,,, why not just save your money and buy a savage? HPI Savage is the best basher out there and has huge part support and can take a real beating! Buggies and truggies are for racing just like 1/10th scale trucks are for racing too.

1/8th scales are ALOT stronger! Dont forget you can always put shock spacers in to raise the ground clearance. Ive even seen truggy or Monster truck tires on their buggy for bashing but I would run the buggy tires at the BMX track.

I agree totaly Dave. If you cant afford it yet just save a little more and get the one you really want.

I really like the Savage, and would really like to have one, but with a new baby and all, I think 300 is pretty much my budget, and that's coming out of my tax return. If you know where I can get one for that let me know, but otherwise it will have to be something else. And the thing is, I like to drive them and jump them and all, but I'm probably not considered a hardcore basher or anything like that, so I'm probably not going to be as hard on it as a lot of people are.

Ow you will be surprised how quickly you will come to beat on what ever it is you get. I have another child on the way to so I do understand and this will be my fourth girl. My advice to you is to go on Ebay and find a good deal on a savage or Tmaxx. Although I am a big fan of the Tamiya TNX. Its a great truck and I raced it for a couple of years and I allways knew that I could beat on it in the back yard if I wanted to and it would take it. Easy truck to work on and very budget friendly! Just make sure it has the old suspension on it and it will be a great truck for you to mess around with. Any other questions on these trucks let me know.

the Lx1 is one of, if not the best starter buggy out there, that and the turmoil from sportwerks, both have a large amount of support, the turmoil can be a little on the pricy side though, ive sold tons of both but i like the LX 1 the best

a good exceed hyper speed begginer version is good for bashing about. it comes all put together all you have to do is put fuel in it and break it in a play. the factory needles to get it tuned is kinda finicky and can be kinda hard but if you look online alot youll get it right. there a great buuggie and im geting another one soon. i have no rc car or anything so i am kinda falling back on rc so i cant remember much. you can look at this buggy at nitrorcx.com its a good website and the buggie is only 120 bucks. and with the extra money you can buy the glow plug igniter, fuel bottle, and some wrenches and srew drivers for 15bucks. hope this helps
