View Full Version : Wheelie King, are they as good as everyone says?

I have heard of these trucks doing spectacular things, i.e. jumping off of an 80 foot (I think) cliff several times in a row with minor damage, totally submurged in water and still running, jumping off a town house roof with no damage. Is this truck really that tough? Does it wheelie as easily as discribed? And does the 4wd version wheelie as easily as the 2wd version? I may have room in my stable for one if they are as tough and fun as everyone says. I will be getting another MT very soon, next month or 2, and I was going to get the vxl stampede. But I may have to go HPI for some real bashing fun. Should I go HPI or Traxxas?

They are pretty tough! i have one and i love it!! it's no where near stock anymore though. it's a tough call though against the VXL as it's no where near as fast ...at least not stock, and if you want to go fast you'll have to make some mods - but with the price difference it works out pretty close to even. Both trucks are great bashers, you really cannot go wrong with either.
and yes, it does wheelie well - even with 4wd.

i would really love a wheelie king, cuz i just realized it's exactly what i've been searching for all this time-a 4wd truck that runs on only one battery and motor!!! lol, i already have a stampede and they are a riot to drive hard, sooooooo much fun, it's what started me in this hobby

I once owned a nitro stampede, and I loved it. I do not really want a vxl stampede for the speed, I want it for the brushless. Less maintanence I would think. However, my front yard were I bash is small, but I have built plenty of obsticles to bash on. So like I said, speed is not my consern. I want something to replace my E-Maxx as my front yard basher as my E-maxx is now more of my "see what I can climb" truck. I would get the XL-5 pede, but my XL-5 Rusty has now had 2 speed controls, and is working on the 3rd, and the stock motor was a p.o.s., as it only took 2 runs with a awsome battery to kill the motor, and as the motor was dieing, it took the speed control with it. I know it is not the battery with problems because it volt test fine, and I use it in my TC4 with no problems.
Maybe I should just get both, that would solve my problem

the wheely king is possibly the strongest truck out there on the market hands down. i have one and i will say the thing performs well beyond what the box and hpi site describes. this thing is a blast to drive and is super easy to work on and perform maintenance. its super reliable and will beg for more abuse. its not the fastest thing ever at 11mph but its easy to speed up because the spur combos and pinion combps are of plenty. but dont get me wrong the stampede is a beast of a truck...but its 2wd. its faster because its 2wd and a ton lighter.
Philderbeast
02-22-2008, 12:32 PM
WOW, 11 mph? How much battery drain do you get by speeding it up to say 18-20. Also, if you speed it up, you should lose tons of power. Hmm, I may need a pede after all. But then again, it is not like I have alot of room run run fast, so, more obsticles should be fun and possibly the way to go.

02-22-2008, 12:38 PM
i get close to 45min on a pack of 3600mah venom and 35min on 2600mah trinity pack and 50min on a 3000mah lipo you really dont see a loss of power until like 3 min left in the pack

02-22-2008, 04:05 PM
Are you running stock gears? That is a long time to run unless you are crawling or something. Alot of my driving would be slower speeds, but I do have the need for huge air. With that in mind, with that slow of a speed, 11 mph, what kind of air will it get from a small, 14 inch high ramp that does a smooth gradual curve into a final 40 degree plane. My revo, on this ramp, at 25-30 mph jumps roughly 7 foot high and around 25 foot long, where my rusty is around 5 high and 15 long. I would think that 11 mph, it would just about fall off the end.
But I do like the idea of mimiking the real deal, sky wheelies, car crushing, slow speed fun. Does the wheelie king have posi track rear ends, or an option to make it full posi?

i am currently running brushless and maxx wheels on my king with no problems so far...with a novak 5800 and a 3000 nimh, i get about 6-10 minutes of runtime believe it or not. it's a lot of part throttle which helps, but it's nice to have the power when needed.
any af the parts for the AX10 diff pop right in, so their locker is easy to drop in.
the cool thing about this truck is you can bash around stock and have a blast, and if you want to soup it up and lengthen the WB for more stability, it is all very easy to do and the truck handles it all in stride.
my only area of concern is i highly recommend a HD ring and pinion for at least the rear axle, i have tore up 2 stock ones now. And i have broke a shock shaft, but i think that was a fluke. only things i have had problems with.

After hours of pondering and research, I have concluded that for my needs, I should probably go traxxas VXL Stampede. I think that I would have a better time bashing this truck than I would the king. I know there are a ton of upgrades if I ever feel the need, and I am a little concerned with the lack of speed the king has factory. Besides, I already have 3 traxxas trucks, what is 1 more right. Perhaps we all should go to the traxxas web site and tell them to make a 4wd version of the vxl pede. That would be wicked.
I do have to say though the wheelie king is still tempting, I may have to get one of those also. But that would require me to hold off on some new batteries for every electric truck I own. hmmm, batteries, or 2 trucks

Just to give you an idea, here is a video of my Wheely King just bashing in the back yard a little when it was stock. The only change here is a better battery than the one it came with.

Well, I could get both right now, but I will only get around 500 bucks to play with, wife has me on an income tax allowance. I will be getting a truggy later this year, if everything goes right. As of right now, I think I should just get the vxl pede, and focus on either the wheelie king, or the truggy for the future. I really need to put a new front diff in my revo so I can race it, and fuel and glowplugz. So just the pede would allow me a new basher, new batteries for the maxx and pede, and the stuff for the revo I need. All in all, that is the wisest solution I think. Unless I can conn the wife into a few extra bucks, you know like $250. LOL, shea right, it was hard enough to get the 500 if I even get that.
Thanx for the vid kw, it kinda reinforced my decision. I think it would be alright stock to go in very small areas, and in the house on cold rainy days. It seems to be a bit bouncy riding and unstable in the turns, so, more speed = more/harder roll overs. I try to avoid those as much as possible....gotcha there didn't I?

I'm glad it helped with your decision. I thought that you would like to see a "real" video of the stock truck rather than the one on the HPI site that makes it look like the truck is a lot faster than it is. (BTW our yard in that area is pretty bumpy)
I have since added a 17t motor and a Novak XRS ESC and it hauls now! I'm still playing around with the gearing.
I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with your Stampede, that's the other one that I was contemplating too.

That is all your concerned about master of disater, my revo, shame on you.
By the way, my 2.5r revo just got a 3.3 installed. It is not even broke in yet. So you would have to do all that work breaking her in, and converting her back to 4wd. That would not be any fun now would it.

Long term plans, HMMM......Staying alive long enough to recieve my package from tower hobbies, and possibly long enough to atleast charge up a battery would be a heck of a goal. (Wife is I-rate, and fighting me every step of the way. But I am a big baby and I need my toys)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sofar my shopping cart is sitting at around $850.00. Who wants to bet this will end in divorse??? I got 20 on it.

I might be behind you in the divorce line, lol. My wife is very tolorant, and she knew she was marrying a walking hobby store but she saw some ideas on how i was scheming to get a 5BSS and pretty much took my wallet away. :)
i did manage to get out and get a Bandit XL5 using a holiday GC that was left over and i immediately Velieon'ed it. that motor and a light buggy is a sick combo, you are going to love your pede. i had a few runs in mine with the VL system and it was awesome!

02-27-2008, 01:57 PM
I thought about getting a xl-5 bandit. But I got the xl5 rusty instead. I figured I could have both by removing the front body mounts, and changing the tires and body. That is the only 3 differances between the 2 that I know of.

I found out that my wife holds the power to my "love life", and if I want a "Love Life", I will do what she says.....Yes Dear. I managed to get a few extra bucks for my fuel and glowplugz though. Here is what I am getting.
1. HPI Wheelie King
2. 4 4200 mah NiMH SMC Batteries
3. 4 new tires with rims for the TC-4 cause it rips the tread off the rim on
takeoff.
4. New diff gears and cups for the revo
5. Ducted fan kit for TC-4
6. New purple springs for the revo, for better ride I hope.
7. There maybe some other things on the list, I just cannot remember right now.
Does anyone know the proper gears to get for the Hpi Wheelie King to get the speed up to say 20-25 MPH. I want to order that too just in case.
At that speed with the 4200 batteies, with stock truck, does anyone know the estamated runtime per battery???? Thanx y'all, and perhaps when we get our other tax rebate money from the IRS, I can get the VXL Pede.

Nice - i just ordered a WK ARR last night for backyard bombing. Actually, i bought it for the axles only, but it will see some snow duty and airtime before i start raiding parts.
in my old one, i was running a 17T motor and a slightly smaller pinion and it was right around that range. with the stock motor....not sure if it's going to get there. Going up 2-3 teeth on the pinion might get you into the upper teens i think.

im guessin like 87t spur and 19-18t pinion should be good. the gears are really inexpensive so i would get three spur gears and three pinion gears and go from there

I goofed, the batteries I am getiing are not smc 4200, they are orien 4500 6 cell packs. I was going to get the smc's, but found these and they were cheaper, so.....Should all be here, Minus the pede sob sob, between the 3rd and 6th of March. Cain't wait. I also got a desert rat lid for Rusty, I will shoot some picks b-4 I tear it up. My oem rusty lid is now missing most of the left rear quarter panel and the back section is hanging on by a thread. I will try to get a video or action shots posted here when my stuff comes in and I have time to get out and murderlize me some obsticals and ramps

I'll have to take some shots of the articulation. If you notice I have the rear "X" brace out to allow max suspension travel on all 4 corners. At max travel these tires fit the wheel wells perfect. I agree looks a bit funny with the little doughnuts down there, but You should have seen it before the shocks were limited !! Real Silly looking :D

The stock tires on the truck look huge for the scale. Wanted a different look than stock & I mainly do indoor crawling for play. These work great & make the truck react like a scale crawler would. They also provide a different than normal look. Which I also really like. I'm a " Dare to be different " kinda person.

Thanx, I will check it out. Fountain of knowledge in here, I am glad I joined.
Next ?. I received my order from tower today, and after I got done going through all my parts I ordered, I decided to take the WK for a test drive in my family room. The thing that caught my attention first was the cross brace on the rear links. I thought I would take it off for some SLOW speed runs. I set up a few obsticals and it did great. Alot of flex. Now my ? is can you safly run with out the cross brace on the rear links and do stock speed jumping from a medium sized ramp...14 inch high ramp with a gradual slope to a final 40 degree ramp exit??? I think it may put alot of strain on the rear links, and break much more easily. I guess common sence should tell me if I plan to do more crawling type driving, take it off, jumping and high speeds, leave it on. One thing I like about it is the versitility of indoor running. Another is the realistic MT look, expecially when jumping. I love the way it looks. I think once outside though, I will hate the slow speed, so I ordered a 24 tooth gear. Cool thing is, it will fit my rusty also...I think, I need to check the pitch. As soon as I get my new batteries charged up for the e-maxx, I will see how the new 650's do under slow speeds with high gears. cain't wait. The supplied 1500 ni-cd battery with WK is great for starters, and lasts long enough my wife was griping about the noise I was making jumping a grate off my heater that I placed onto of my soldering gun case to create a makeshift ramp. WK drove great as I was 10 foot away from the ramp and the ramp is 2 inches wider that the wheel base of WK and I hit it perfect all but once. I spent alot of lid time getting to KNOW WK, but now I am confident in my driving skills and believe that high speed passes will result in fewer turn overs. Now if I can just get the new REVO and brushless Stampede. LOL Thanx for the help y'all...Bashracer79

Now that I have ran it more, I find a problem. Aside from glueing the antennae tube in place, how can I keep it in the slot? It has fallen out 4 times in an hour. By the way, since when has a electric vehicle been able to run an hour on one charge? I get tired of running it in my family room even though I when and got the little bump I made from 2 1 by 4's and I have the make shift ramp I built from the heater grate and soldering gun case and I made a circle track around my new work table/old dining room table. I had fun for the first 20 minutes or so, but then I was like man, is this battery ever gonna die? By the way, the Team Orion 4500 Mah Ni-MH batteries I bought are awesome. If any of you out there want a budget battery with performance battery characteristics, check it out @ tower Hobbies. I think they were $47.99 per. They are called Orion Rocket Packs.

A while back ago I bought a car at walmart that sports 2 different challenger bodies and they are similar to lexan. I test it them and they will work on WK with new holes drilled for body posts and antennae. I will also have to change body post height to accommodate the body's. I am unsure right now though if I will have enough body post height, so if not, can you get extended body post's and if so, where? I may be able to just trim the bodies down some, but they may look goofy afterwords

ok well thats a ton of posts ill help. the shocks were the first things to go on my king. i would look into upgrading some cheap aluminum shocks...which is fine beings that there are a ton of shock options. ifor the antanne question i just wrapped it around the front shock tower.

Thanx, I played with the gearing some, and decided on a 28 tooth from my rusty. It works fine outside, but the motor lacks enough power to pull the front wheels very well. It needs a little assistance by means of reverse. I will try out my trinity 27 turn Revenge of the Monster motor. Perhaps that will give out more power. I may need to go for a 20 turn or whatever the esc limit was. I am currently getting close to 20 mph outside now, so I think I may be satisfied somewhat.

well, i see you broke the king in! :) a few tips and pointers...
I use some fuel tubing to hold my antenna on...slip a piece over the bottom holder thingie and then put the antenna tube in - it won't came out so easily.
bent both front shocks? wow. i broke 1, but it was off a 5 foot high jump and a very awkward landing. i have 4 sets of these shocks and have not had much trouble other than that. The nitro MTSS's rear shocks are a direct fit, and they offer them in threaded aluminum. much beefier, but pricier too. i did notice a lot of slop on my shocks - seems like the springs were not quite long enough for the shock body which could lead to things bending easier. i added some more pre-load spacers and they really helped. Switching to the black heavy duty springs made a tremendous difference in handling all around - especially at higher speeds, i highly recommend them and they are not that expensive.
i am running a cross brace on both front and rear for bash duty. it gives a ton of stability, but you lose a lot of suspension action It does really beef up the links imo. i plan to trim them up a bit to still give some support, but allow them to flex a bit more. for slow speeds, i would recommnd removing them.
with the 2wd truck, the stock motor launched the front end in the air - this one you can really notice the extra weight in the front. mine will pull up the front wheels with good traction stock, but not like the 2wd truck, that's for sure.
you can get extended body posts, they are an HPI part that came with the hummer body. Mine came with 1 longer one - i have no idea why.

If I ever get this video thing going, I will post em up.
FYI, during the vid shoot, wk suffered bent 4 links up front, bent steering rod, bent wheely bar, and wheels now whobble. E-Maxx suffered from receiver damage, but it is getting better. E-maxx barely jumped off the ground, an inch or 2 most, but the creek did her in. The stiff springs sure made an improvement. It is quite stable now. I need to remove the wheely bar for awsome wheelies, or move up to a larger pinion. the same gearing with stock 550's would run roughly 10-12 mph, now it is close to 20. same gears. It must have been home-made or something, but I think it was better. Buy an HP, not a dell they say, shows what they know. $1,000 bucks buys it, 19 inch lcd flatpanel monitor and all.
just a guess, but i'll wager $100 that you are running Vista on your new computer. We have had a lot of issues trying to get vista running at work - in fact, we have been stripping it off and re-installing XP on them. 1 thing to note is vista is a memory hog, you need at least 2 gigs of RAM from what I've seen for it to run smoothly. Systems analyst at your service.
Sorry to hear about the king - how did you bend the pastic parts??

First off, I will lose $100 bucks on that bet cause it is Vista. Secondly, it is a 3 gig. Thirdly, AFTER I bought this computer, I heard about some of the problems with vista. Fourthly, I have been thinking of going to xp again, now if I only still had my xp 2000 perfesional disc. Fifthly, Seriously wicked landings bent the 4 links...the wk vid is ok, not much action, a few good and bad landings...wife finally ran the camcorder and was in a hurry and gripeing the whole time, I will have to edit out her complaints. The e-maxx video sucks, not much action at all, and I screwed up on the record button at one point, so I was recording when I did not want to, and wasn't when I wanted too, so, the final moments of the e-maxx were not caught on tape...:(
I fryed the esc in a creek bed. But on the plus side, I had cattle chasing it down, it was funny. You know, for running 14 tooth pinions and a 84 tooth spur, she is still very fast, I estimate 16-18 mph top end. Not bad for those gears, alot of weight, and motors that should be fewer rpms than the stock motors. Kinda runs like twin 12 turn modifyed motors with tons upon tons of torque.
I think I will try putting my old computer back on line to try this video crap out.
