I thought I would start a thread documenting an upcoming project that is going to be killer and one of a kind.
As many know, the Kyosho Giga Crusher was offered as a Dual Force with dual Kyosho GS-26 engines. The two engines alone were shown to have equal or less power then the Giga Crusher Single Force with the .28. Swapping in new engines is not as easy as some would think. The Giga Crusher DF GS-26s don't have motor mounts- the motor mounts are cast into the engine block. That is problem 1. Problem 2, The GS-26s use a short shaft. Problem 3, the exhaust routes down the center of the chassis with a unique Kyosho header.
So, I got my parts list together and ordered everything. This is the ingredients for my dual axial .28 Giga-
2 x OFNA 145cc tanks from a Violator
2 x Aluminum clutch shoes/flywheel sets
2 x Savage Headers
2 x XTM Monster MT pipes
2 x Axial .28s Spec 1s
2 x Tiger Drives
2 x Monster GT engine mounts
I am doing the full conversion for <$300! That is less then a decent racing engine. You guys are gonna like how it turns out. I am also going to build an aluminum hump to protect the hood scoop and upgrade the differentials for the extra power.

I am interested to see how you get those motor mounts to work. I hate the way kyosho has proprietary engines that require no mounts!

Agreed... Plus the motor mounts for a standard size .21 are $40 ea! No way I am paying $80 for 2 motor mounts. My retrofit time will save me about $60 in parts costs.
i want to watch this project very closely:D :D :D    :) :) :)

Wow, and when I thought I had seen it all. I guess the next step would be to see if the tranny and diffs can handle the torque! Can't wait to see the results, it sounds SICK!

I figure the tranny is built for dual engines already, and I am beefing the diffs heavily with Savage innards. I am going to keep the slipper nice and loose mind you. The caveat to this great product is that the Giga Crusher has already been discontinued. If I break it, I am going to be making replacements.

Dude I have had a dual force giga_crusher for a couple of years and it will not break. I have beat the living heck out of this thing and the only issue I ever had was the clutch bearings. Stupid needle rollers!!!

First step- get GS-26's outta there. I have to remember to thank Kyosho for the .02 cents they saved for casting the mounts into the engines instead of having a standard .21 mount. Thanks Kyosho. Really.
This is what I am up against-
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga1.JPG
Here is an MGT engine mount that I will reverse engineer onto the Giga. Not a good fit like this.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga2.JPG
Mount goes on a lot better backwards. Bingo! Plus it keeps the stock holes untouched, so I can always put the stockers back on.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga3.JPG
Only problem with the brace is the angle support won't clear the engine backplates. Probably important for an MGT, but since this truck has the cool integrated roll cage, the cooling head won't take a direct hit. So, off goes the angle supports.
Before-
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga4.JPG
After; Positions the engine perfectly for a good mesh.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga5.JPG
The next step is to remove some material from the MGT engine mount so the engine shafts sit at the same height. You can see that the GS-26 is lower by about .242". I will remove .12" from the top of the MGT mount and .12" from the bottom of the mount.

nice i wonder just how much more power it will make.:D :D

No, there is a 'turbo glow plug'.
From Radio Control Boat Modeler:
WHAT IS A TURBO PLUG?
Glow plugs are available in two configurations: standard and turbo. Most engines come with a standard plug. They feature a straight, threaded housing that threads through the cylinder head into the combustion chamber. Turbo plugs feature a different type of housing; the end that goes into the combustion chamber is tapered. The tapered end mates with a head that is specially designed for use with turbo plugs. The head is also tapered to accept this type of plug. The supposed advantages are less compression leakage around the glow plug and less disruption of the combustion chamber. The hole in the cylinder head that exposes the glow plug to the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder is much smaller, and there are fewer rough edges to create unwanted hot spots.

Today went EXTREMELY well. After I played with the MGT mount a bit, it adapted very well onto the chassis. I got the engine bolted down with the perfect amount of adjustability to get the clutchbell/spur mesh right. The mesh is perfect.
The Mach 26 you see is just a mock up engine. Just a placeholder for the Axials. So far the upgrade is 100% reversible! I am happy with that.
Here is pic one of the engine mounted and screwed to the giga chassis. Plenty of clearance from the front driveshaft and outdrive.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga7.JPG
Pic of the alignment and gear mesh. I am confident that the mount will not be able to readjust and wipe out the plastic spurs. This went better then expected. Hopefully the mount holds up being reverse mounted and weakened from the material I took off. I suspect it will hold up ok. There is still a lot more material then your typical 1/8 buggy mount.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga8.JPG
This is where I got really excited. My exhaust idea was PERFECT from what I pictured in my head. I bought the stuff without knowing if it would work or not. I used a Savage header to clear the rollcage assembly and then an XTM manifold/pipe from a Monster MT to route right down the side of the chassis. It turned out exactly how I hoped it would. I will get some nice matching silicone couplers when the truck gets finally built. Also, I am going to brace where the two headers meet. Picture one of those fire breathers on each side of the truck!

Finally a teaser shot with the body on and the exhaust poking out. Looks pretty wicked to me.

That cooling head for the Mach 26 is huge! Ar you worried about clearence between the cooling heads once they are both mounted?

Don't forget, the Mach 26 is a place holder. The axial 28's that are going on don't have as large of diameter cooling head, plus they are machined on the sides.

Next step is definitely a 'no turning back' step for the new engines. You have to hack the crankshaft to accommodate the Giga's clutchbell shaft. This is not for the squeamish. Small children should leave the room. Of course that is a bit dramatic. I could always buy 2 new crankshafts and they are as good as new.
At the chopping block-
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga12.JPG
We just nipped the tip. Some say this is a right of passage. I had a Rabbi perform the operation.

Little greenie meanie preview. This looks SOOO right with those nice green cooling heads side by side.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga14.JPG
I had another great finding here. Based on the way I am routing the exhaust, it is the PERFECT clearance for the tiger drives!!! I was worried about this, but yet another puzzle piece falls into place.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga15.JPG
I did have a setback... Savage clutchbells and clutch will not work with this. I am going to run the stock Giga clutches for now (look like MIP clutches). Once I toast those, I will figure out what to do.

Here's the final mockup shots before a total tear down and rebuild. I did ruin one of the MGT engine mounts, so I had to get one more to redo. Now the truck gets torn down and rebuilt. I haven't run the truck since I bought it last year and the shocks are leaking, diffs are leaking and the thing is dirty and sticky. You won't see pics for a while... Project isn't complete but there is a lot of dirty work to do. I put on RC Raven Maxx springs and Team VTX exhaust couplers. I really like the monochromatic look. It's all black, grey and white besides the cooling heads.
I never run engines before pulling them apart, inspecting and resealing them also.

Thanks guys! Here is an update-
Completely pulled the truck apart. It was a mess. Diff fluid, oil, shock oil everywhere. It was sticky and hard to clean. I started putting the truck back together. Since a lot of you have probably never seen a Giga Crusher up close, this will give you an idea of what it's all about.
Diffs got the 4 spider gear treatment compliments of HPI Savage gears. The stock diffs have 2 spider gears made of cheap cast material. The HPI gear set is much better suited to higher power.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga16.JPG
Both diffs are done. I chose a synthetic grease instead of diff oil. One, because it won't leak and two it's not like I am trying to track tune this truck. It's a basher. The gears are also a spiral cut which is a good thing. Diffs are shimmed and are super smooth.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga17.JPG
I put the front/rear axle assemblies together. This is where the truck shows some of it's brute. The a-arms are super thick and solid and the bulkheads are thick and heavy. Unlike the T-Maxx, this truck will not break these bulkheads. If this truck breaks a bulkhead, I have far worse thing to repair! You can see the posts for the 1/8 buggy style integrated steering saver.

Also, I have been back and forth on the engine mounts. I finally decided that I am putting so much effort into this, it's stupid not to spend a few extra bucks and get the right engine mounts instead of continually reworking the Monster GT mounts.
Off go Monster GT mounts and on go expensive (but perfect) Kyosho option mounts made for the giga.

Yes, they are $40/ea and they are painful to buy. However, with as much work as I am putting in and as important as these mounts are I don't want to skimp on them.

Plus another way to look at it. I ruined one MGT mount, so two MGT mounts just cost me $20. That is halfway there and it will never be as good as those Kyosho mounts. My biggest concern is damaging the 3 speed gears due to flex or misalignment of the mounts.

Engine mounts will be in on Thursday. I also ordered blue GPM racing servo mounts (throttle, fwd/reverse & steering)-
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga19.jpg
Cleaned and rebuilt tranny last night. I am very impressed with the tranny on this truck. The gears are large with a big pitch and very wide, which is a good thing. The slipper is meaty, the tranny case is heavy and reinforced. The forward/reverse setup is simple and effective. Some fwd/rev setups are overly complex. This one is simple and will presumable work well.

Hey Daveo-
I found the engine mounts cheaper, about $5/ea cheaper then what Kyosho advertises. $34 is better then $39 and $68 is better then $78 for two! Plus Kyosho charged me $11 for shipping these two tiny parts!
Unfortunately for me I found these AFTER my order shipped.

That is excellent. I will pick up a couple of those. Do they make getting the engines in and out any easier? When I broke the stock ones in I had to do it one engine at a time. If I didn't remove the engine that was not running it killed the bearings in the clutch.

another heads up for you is that the stock bearings are those horrible needle bearing roller things. I replaced mine with ball bearings. I think they are 5x8. It takes like 5 of them to replace the old bearings, but they last waaaaaay longer than the stock ones.

Sorry, that is the breadth of my knowledge. The truck isn't even mine, but a friend of mine saw my cars and had to one up me, so he bought this thing. He has no RC experience. He gave it to me to look at and I tore it down completely and rebuilt it for him. He bought it used and it was filthy but in surprisingly good shape. I replaced the bearings in the clutch, and that was the only thing I had to do. He hates the pull start and wanted a tiger drive but we could not figure out how to make it work on the stock motors. Man I hate that proprietary crap! He was going to design something but has never done it. In the mean time I have been waring out his pistons and sleeves since he won't drive it because he will get blisters on his poor little fingers:rolleyes:. The truck is a tank and it is a blast. Even with the stock motors there are wheelies on demand!!!

Another shot-
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga21.JPG
After tearing the truck apart, I only found one thing that seemed weak and under designed. That is the turnbuckles. They are like 1/10 scale turnbuckles. I am going to measure them and swap them out for something meatier with larger ball ends as well. I will probably drill out the existing holes in the knuckles for some larger diameter hardware too. Here is a pic. You can see what I am talking about.

Hit a snag that will hold me up most of the week.
I was trying to use the stock Kyosho flywheel and clutches after the Integy Savage clutch/flywheel sets I bought wouldn't work. The Savage flywheel setup pushes the clutch bell too far from the clutch shoes because it has a hump cast into it. I tried to grind the hump flat but then there wasn't enough material left on the flywheel for the collet to grab onto. So, I reverse engineered the Kyosho stock flywheels and tried to get them to work.
I thought everything was going fine until I tried to mount the engines yesterday. On the RH side, the flywheel is just way too big and has massive contact with the throttle linkage tunnel. The tunnel is pretty weak and there is too much contact to just remove some material from anywhere. Plus, I am not going to risk the throttle linkage breaking.
With the way I am routing my exhaust, I have 0 options to reroute the throttle linkage.
So, I had to order some specific Kyosho flywheels that I have been told works. I ordered them this morning. In the meantime, I can get the electronics going I guess.
Here is what I am talking about-

Hey Dale,
I guess I missed it earlier in the thread, why did you not use the flywheels that came on the original engines?
Kyosho has some wacky, wacky crankshaft key that holds the flywheel in place. If you ever take your buddies apart you will just shake your head in disbelief.
They don't even use a standard tapered collet. I actually tried to reverse engineer the flywheels, but they ending up being too far back and contacted the throttle linkage- that is what you see in the pictures.
Bottom line, Kyosho needs to quit doing this non-standard crap. I see the differences they use as cost savings, not performance enhancing. So they shave 10 cents off of their cost of goods sold at the expense of interoperability with off the shelf stuff.

Daveo-
Here is the stock Kyosho flywheel that I tried to use. No way to reverse engineer the setup to get them to work. It works out better that I am getting away from the stock Kyosho setup, because I already have some good aluminum clutch shoes that will last longer and grab better for this big old tank.

You are right on the money with that comment. I did not take the flywheel off so I never encountered that one. I can't believe how hard it is just to upgrade the motors!!!! Does kyosho do this kind of stuff with all of thier products or only the ones that people love to modify? One would think that the way monster truck drivers like to tinker wth stuff that kyosho would have seen a marketing opportunity. Kind of like the after market for the tmaxx.

I have the flywheels in from Kyosho. The Giga Crusher took a break while I built my 5B up. Suprisingly, the Integy aluminum clutches wouldn't go on the Kyosho flywheels without drilling them out to 3mm. I took care of that.
I also had to grind a notch all the way around the Kyosho shaft that extends the crankshaft out to accomodate the clutch springs. The stock clutch was MIP style, so the crankshaft extension wasn't notched to hold clutch springs.
I am held up right now because I ordered those cool GPM aluminum pieces for the steering and throttle servos and they have apparently been lost. The shipper put my zip code wrong and the parts never showed up. So, I guess I am stuck with the stock plastic mounts for now if I ever want to build this truck back up.
I will get pics up soon.

Here is the update so far.
Got the GPM mounts finally. Steering servo is ready to go on. This JRZ4750 needs to come out, I will get a stronger servo in there shortly. I honestly forgot how weak this servo was until I read the spec. D'oh!
JRZ4750 specs, not to impressive for an MT steering, great transit time though-
Torque: 96 oz/in at 6V
Speed: .12 sec/60° at 6V
Dimensions: 0.73 x 1.52 x 1.32in
Weight: 1.72 oz
Bearing: Dual
Motor Type: Coreless

Here is the GPM aluminum mounts for the throttle/brake and forward/reverse servos. A JRZ590 and ZR270 handle the duties, respectively. I was NOT happy with the stock throttle/brake linkages and made significant changes to it. I might redo the brake linkage again but the throttle is much smoother now.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga29.JPG
The first engine/exhaust/gas tank are all mounted and ready to rock. This is no longer a test fit, this is all bolted down. Shocks are rebuilt on one side. I am relocating the receiver to the open area where the exhaust used to route. The wiring routes MUCH cleaner then it did stock and I am very happy with it.

Latest update... I put quite a bit of work into the truck this weekend.
First off, here is a pic of the crank shaft extension I had to mod to hold clutch springs in place. I circled where I had to grind a little groove to hold clutch springs. The stock clutch is MIP style. This is the only way to hold clutch springs in place is to mod the shaft.
http://www.intergate.com/~rpurcell/rcu/giga_project/giga32.JPG
Next was figuring out how to mount those cool Integy MSR5 shocks. First off, I am not super impressed with the shocks. They sure look cool, but I am really apprehensive whether they will work out or not.
The stock upper mounts are ball ends. So, I had to find a way to get these mounted. I ordered some HPI hellfire shock mounts, and to my luck they worked out. I had to grind the balls off of them and then put a nylon spacer between the mount and the shock. This was a time consuming step (x8)... Here are four of the modded mounts with the nylon spacers.

Here is a shock teaser shot with RC Raven springs.

Here is the electronics setup... Many guys won't appreciate the amount of work involved in this... The giga crusher stock has little pods that go on either side of the roll cage setup that hold the battery and receiver. Since I wanted the exhaust to route close to the chassis, they actually rubbed against the stock pods. So, since the exhaust is routed on the OUTSIDE instead of stock on the inside, I put an aluminum T-Maxx receiver box where the stock exhaust used to route. I used some small spacers so I could route the wiring under the box. I had to rework the TMaxx receiver box to access chassis screws underneath too.
I am swapping the rx hump pack to a flat pack and it will secure to the roll cage alongside the transmission.
It turned out very good. I am much happier with the servo wire routing along the chassis now. It is cleaner and more safe then stock.

Here it is gents... Truck is almost complete. I just need one more set of clutch springs for one of the engines. I decided on Mugen 1.1mm springs because I want the engines to build up a little more RPMs before the clutches engage. Should keep the clutches from getting hot and get better launches.
After this, the truck is ready to roll! There is no more mock up... This stuff is all bolted down.
Here it is! I also have a body picked out. The 1/10 body is a hair small, plus you can't see what is in the body with the blacked out windows.
So, body + clutch springs, and it's done!

Set up all throttle/brake, fwd/rev and steering linkages
glued tires
Zip tied everything that needed zip tied
charged Rx pack
Break in should be fun! I will cycle the first engine, while it is cooling I will cycle the second engine and then repeat.

Got both engines started up for their first heat cycle round (one at a time). Things were going very well until I got kicked off of the large dirt lot I was running on.
It's hard to find a large open area to run in Western PA. I was just keeping to myself on a nice dirt lot and the dude came and was in disbelief that I ran RC cars on the lot. It could have gone to fisticuffs, but I just packed my crap and took off.

Round two for heat cycling today... Only got one heat cycle per engine.
#2 engine started idling fast and heating up quickly for no apparent reason towards the end of its heat cycle with 1/2 tank of fuel left- #1 engine is perfect. Means I have an airleak somewhere #2. This is a freshly sealed engine carefully reassembled with brand new fuel line tubing.
Stock fuel tanks have a swiveling fuel outlet and that is suspect #1 right now. 100% the stock tanks will need to go. The design is quite poor. Tomorrow, I will probably swap the fuel tanks around and see if the leak follows the fuel tank or whether there is something else. Maybe the pinch bolt is loose around the carb or something, although unlikely.
dale_gribble
06-30-2008, 09:59 AM
Round 3 of heat cycling done... Lefty is doing very well, Righty is still running a hair lean and was reaching 250-260 during break in even if I ran it rich to the point that it was stalling out. It isn't completely obvious though, but his temps do creep up. Lefty is getting up to 230 and staying there which is perfect.
I am going to run Righty from Lefty's gas tank and see if it doesn't run lean. I am hoping it is the gas tank, because otherwise Righty is going to have to come out and go under the knife. I hope its the gas tanks- the gas tanks are WAY too small for the Giga anyways. 5 minutes tops run time.
Clutch isn't dragging, there doesn't seem to be any strain on the engine when I turn it over indicating any drag. I think it's either the carb or the fuel tank.

dale_gribble
07-08-2008, 01:52 PM
I think I may have found the problem. I am going to keep my fingers crossed that the next break in tank finds the engine running cooler.
It isn't the gas tank. It isn't the fuel line. It isn't any drag on the engine. I think it may have been a tear in the rear exhaust gasket, I have heard those can cause lean conditions. I also pulled the needles, cleaned them and set the guy back to factory settings. Keep your fingers crossed, hopefully it pulls through. :D

WooHoo! I released the Righty's demons! Right tank held a tune around 220-230 for the whole of break in tank #4. Righty and Lefty are both holding a tune and running SUPERB!
I run about 30 minutes of heat cycling before I turn engines loose. That is about 6 break in cycles of 5 minutes each. Few more break in tanks and its time to crank em both up! I can't wait because it is FAST on a single engine.
dale_gribble
07-09-2008, 10:13 PM
Oh, for break in set #5, I decided what the heck and decided to break in both at once. This is the first time that I fired both up at once. One word- UNREAL...
I can't recommend dual setups to new nitro enthusiasts, because it took a lot of experience to get the engines' linkage right, get them setup right, and as you know I had to deal with an unruly engine. As an advanced enthusiast, I became discouraged after all of the work I did initially and then having problems; but when both of those fired up in unison and ran literally PERFECT for the break in cycle, I am still grinning after about 3 hours. Once more tank each to complete my heat cycling break in method!
Both engines idle perfectly, and both ran perfectly at 225-235 for the 5 minutes of break in.
The engines are each running at slightly different RPMs and the harmonics are music to my ears. I can't even explain it. So, its video time I think. Just imagine 2 nitro engines running almost at the same RPMs simultaneously through the powerband and watching this huge truck rocket launch past you.
It was shifting to second no problem, I didn't hear any third shifts. Third will probably come when I lean the engines just a hair more and run them around 250-260.
Daveo
07-10-2008, 10:16 AM
DUDE that is awesome. I can't wait to see the video. i know that with the stock motors the thing is unreal, I am betting with the tuned pipe and the powerful axial motors that it will be over the top!

Dale, first of all let me thank you for starting and updating this thread. It's been great to follow your project.
I just couldn't believe it when I found it, as you have done a lot of the exact same things that I was planning with my DF (Gusess I will have to go for the .32 engines now then since you have allready done the .28 ;) hehe)
Really looking forward to those vid's! Keep all the good things flowing in here.
Best regards from Norway,

Thanks Dale :)
Just a very quick question by the way... I noticed you cut the pilot shaft on the new Axial engines? Was this because you tried everything else and it did not work, or just due to the time needed to to find other solutions? I just found the bell guid for pilot shafts that Kyosho makes (originally a Madforce part) that is said to work with most aftermarket motors with this shaft type for the GC as well but I have not tried it yet.
Was hoping I could avoid cutting the shaft. It looks so painful doing that to a lovely new engine...
Part No. for the bell guid is MAW008 btw.
Cheers,
NGC

NorthernGC-
I chose to cut the pilot shafts because my budget was drying up. However, I think you can use the Mad Force 3 speed clutchbell and that adapts to the standard SG shaft without cutting. As a matter of fact, I sized up my Mad Force's 3 speed and it seemed to work just fine.
I chose to cut shafts for free. Replacement crankshafts are $15-20 if you ever wanted to buy new ones and return your engines to stock. So, if the replacement crankshafts are cheaper then the clutchbells, maybe that is the answer.

THis project reached a monumental milestone yesterday. After trouble getting both mills to run right, getting all of the linkage right and other problems, I finally got this truck to run 100% perfectly. Both engines run perfectly, start right up and the truck will run tank after tank. Friday was the first day that I got both engines to run a few tanks after a good bash session at a construction site.
You know what is next now... Video!!!
To commemorate this event, here are pics of the now 100% functional Giga!

Funny you bring the Giga up. She is going on the auction block here soon to fund some new projects. I haven't run it in 6 or so months now.
