View Full Version : Tamiya CR-01 Live Build

This just arrived on the doorstep, figured I'd build it and update the thread as I make progress.

I had just finished weeding the flower bed and headed inside for a shower before going out to grab lunch. Got out of the shower, headed out the door, and found the box waiting for me. :D

When I get back from lunch I'll get started on the build.

Now thats a cool kit right there. I'll have to watch as it comes together. I might be in for one of these myself. Maybe then I can give the Wheely King a rest ! I really like the looks of it !

Man Jason, why do you keep making me join new forums? (You have been one step ahead since MaxxTraxx, to RCCrawler and Scale4x4rc to here...) Least I have been able to keep the same screen name...

Hey, you done yet? Its past beer-thirty...

Work space is cleaned up (enough anyway) so it's time to get started.

A few shots before I start.

First shot is of an addendum that comes with the kit. It lists optional parts that will be available from Tamiya.

Next is a comparison shot with Axial Rock Lizards (mounted), Tamiya Vise Crawlers (unmounted), and Pro-Line M2K (mounted).

4th is the decal sheet.

Last shot is the parts bags. Notice the .3mm shims that are included to set ring/pinion mesh.

Of course it has full ball bearings. Huge thanks to Tamiya! :D

Trikster
03-25-2008, 07:13 PM
How squishy do those Tamiya tires feel? I think I am going to need to get one of these.

JasonC
03-25-2008, 07:33 PM
Step One is out of the way.

All you do in step one is build the cantilever systems for the front and rear. A couple of things to pay attention to: Orientation of parts C3 and C6, and the orientation of part BA31. BA31 is the "link shaft" that the torsion bars slide into. These MUST be installed with the slots 90 degrees to the centerline of part C3 or you'll find yourself disassembling this bits later.

JasonC
03-25-2008, 08:10 PM
Step 2 is done.

The cantilever assemblies and the ladder frame are attached to the chassis rails in this step.

Since it's hard to tell which was is front right now, the simple way to tell is that the front cantilever assemblies are mounted to the rails with three screws and the rear assemblies use two.

Double J
03-25-2008, 08:12 PM
wow looks like some interesting parts. and the decal sheet:eek: ... Got lines?:D

JasonC
03-25-2008, 08:27 PM
Step 3 is done.

Instead of installing the 14 3mm nuts in this step like the manual states I figured it would be safer to install them just prior to step 4 - when I bolt them to the frame rails.

NluvwithXLR8ing
03-25-2008, 08:31 PM
Cant wait to see that body detailed!! Looks awesome

JasonC
03-25-2008, 09:01 PM
Step 4 is done.

Just as I'd suspected, those 3mm nuts were determined to give me a hard time.

Front of the chassis to the left in the first image.

Don't forget to install the stabilizer rods in this step...not that I forgot or anything. :o

Next on the list...Axles. :D

JasonC
03-25-2008, 09:18 PM
Step 5 is done.

Eight E-clips, eight .3mm shims, eight bearings, and five minutes spent looking for a lost E-clip.

Diffs are assembled and ready to go into the axles...

JohnRobHolmes
03-25-2008, 09:34 PM
Do these axles have a locker pin just like the hilift? Are the axle shafts like a tlt shaft or are they replacement hilift parts?

JasonC
03-25-2008, 09:43 PM
More on the axles.

Notice the webbing in the axle cases. This was added to increase strength instead of being hollow like TLT and other axles housings.

I installed the pins to lock the diff in this step.

JasonC
03-25-2008, 09:48 PM
Do these axles have a locker pin just like the hilift? Are the axle shafts like a tlt shaft or are they replacement hilift parts?

They lock like a Hi-Lift but part numbers say that they are different.

The part number for the LC40 shafts is 9808178.

The Hi-Lift shafts are listed as 3485158 and 3485159.

Without ripping the Hi-lift apart to put calipers on them, it's hard to say right now.

Assembled the Cs and knuckles.

The Cs allow you to set caster at either 15 or 25 degrees. The front should be at 15, the rear at 25.

The trick is that the Cs are both part J2 but there's an A and B part.

The parts are labeled (see images) so that'll help clarify things. The letters should be facing up when you install the steering knuckles.

The arms on the steering knuckles are not centered vertically...pay attention. The high side of the arms goes with the letter side of the C...if that makes any sense.

Axles are built.

Kingpin to kingpin is 163mm on centers.

TLT is 137mm on centers, Wheely King is 169mm on centers.

Hi-Lift axles are 143mm.

I've included comparison shots with a TLT axle, a Wheely King axle, and the three together.

It's wider than a TLT, narrower than a WK.

Very interesting, appears Tamiya has beefed up the weak points of the TLT axles and made them look better.

JasonC
03-26-2008, 12:47 AM
Started on the steering.

Running low on servos so I grabbed an Airtronics 94357 from the bin. I'm using the stock servo saver (See how it does on this crawler) so the 94357 should be enough to make the servo saver wad up if it's going to.

All the SS springs are installed.

JasonC
03-26-2008, 01:22 AM
Front axle assembly is complete.

I used that old Airtronics servo and after assembling things as the manual states. I had to shave one of the unused screw bosses on part B3 so the pivot ball for the steering link would clear. I could have shimmed the servo forward but this was easier.

JohnRobHolmes
03-26-2008, 01:25 AM
I hope you have a power screwdriver for all of those screws!

JasonC
03-26-2008, 01:53 AM
No, not a power screwdriver here.

Never use them for assembling kits.

I've found a problem in the instructions.

With the rear knuckles canted at 25 degrees you can't install the rear toe link in the innermost holes in the steering knuckles as indicated in the instructions. Part B3 (large webbed piece above the diff) is directly in the path of the toe link.

I moved the toe link to the outer holes and everything fit like it should.

JasonC
03-26-2008, 02:20 AM
Had a visitor.

Working through the suspension install. The front axle is hung from 4-links.

The front upper links are based off a 48mm center aluminum shaft and the other six links are built from 68mm shafts.

Transmission is built.

All the planetary gears ride on bearings.

Motor is a standard Mabuchi 540 with a 20 tooth pinion.

JasonC
03-26-2008, 02:32 PM
Jumped ahead to the wheels and tires.

I'll be heading out shortly so this will be the last post until about 9 P.M. Eastern.

These wheels are 1.4" in width.

Tried to pull the bead out of the wheels - no luck.

Shouldn't have a problem with the beads coming out.

Got some shoes on.

It builds up to an 11" wheelbase if you follow the instructions.

Track width of the axles (outside of tire to outside of tire) is 10.25"

I'm out now...until 9 P.M. or so.

rambuller84

YES THAT IS THE BEST BODY I HAVE EVER SEEN...lol it is great

JasonC
03-27-2008, 01:00 AM
Suspension links and shocks are built and installed.

I had put off building the shocks (one of my least favorite things to do, along with building turnbuckles). Seems this was a bad idea. Doing so made installing the shocks at the ladder frame difficult.

Oh well, done now.

Scattman
03-27-2008, 01:05 AM

Either way, I like it. Really diggin' the tranny. Hope it can handle some power.

Cutting out the FJ body now.

Put the calipers on the lexan at the corners.

Seems to measure out to .035" lexan at the corners

JasonC
03-27-2008, 02:18 AM
Finished trimming the body.

As you'd expect from Tamiya, there's great detail in the body. The door and windshield hinges have raised bolts, the diamond plate on the steps looks good, and there are no flaws in the body (unlike other FJ/FJ-ish) bodies that we've seen.

Tomorrow will be spent masking, painting, and applying dozens of decals.

Done for the night.

WOO-HOO :D

JasonC
03-27-2008, 02:07 PM
Reamed holes in the body.

The body is 181mm wide at the front fenders, has an overall length of 15", and has a wheelbase of about 10 3/8".

This body will be nice for 1.9 builds. It fits the XC/CC-01 chassis at 10.5" well. :D (last two shots)

If you center the rear tires in the wheel arch of the body, the front tires are pushed forward a bit, but hey - that's a better approach angle. :D

JohnRobHolmes
03-27-2008, 02:12 PM
That does fit great on the XC chassis!

For the tranny, it looks like there was another set of holes for the planetary gears. For a different pinion size I assume? What is the total reduction of the tranny?

Great job Jason, once you get it built you need to pull the wagon around a bit.

JavelinSST390
03-27-2008, 02:57 PM
give us a flex shot!:D

JasonC
03-27-2008, 04:02 PM
OK, obligatory flex shot. :)

I built the suspension as indicated in the manual in step 20 (red arrows), placing the dampers as indicated at the ladder frame.

That allows plenty of travel in the front, the cantilevers strike the frame rail at about the same time the dampers reach full extension. (dampers extend as suspension compresses) The rear link geometry is different, though.

(2nd image)
In the rear it's a different story - I have very little travel. The dampers reach full extension early in the suspension cycle. I double-checked damper placement in step 20 and found that I hadn't gone brain dead during the middle of the night while assembling the suspension. Step 26 shows the dampers installed in the same spot as in step 20, but in step 27 the rear dampers are in a different location (red arrow). This seems seems like a good solution, but due to tight clearance between the ball end for the lower suspension links and the ladder frame...there's no room.

The solution is to place the rear damper at the green arrow when mounting to the ladder frame. This will allow for more articulation but still doesn't allow for full travel.

(3rd image)
The next thing to do is to change the damper's upper mounting point. The outer hole on the cantilever swings a wider arc than the inner hole so to reduce the amount of travel at the damper for the same amount of suspension movement I moved the damper's mounting point closer to the cantilever pivot. With the damper mounting points changed I now have full travel in the rear.

Now to tackle that body. Suggestions on color?

As for the color, it's a Toyota. Band-Aid tan with a white roof.

wonder if the rear doesn't flex as much by design. hot set up on my crawler was always to tighten up the rear much more than the front.....just musing though.

That toyota is awesome!!! The ironman's ride...

As far as paint, i have never seen a shiny FJ, like to see something close to what was done with the red rust 'yota hi-lift - the weathered beater look was great! (with a well placed call to Tamiya America of course)

Not sure about the flex thing.

Decided on body color...something bright.

Window masks are pre-cut but the decals need to be cut by hand.

I spent a ton of time last night to mask the roof line so it was nice and straight and wouldn't bleed. When I got ready to start applying decals I found out that there are while decals to go around the roof line.

I haven't started with the windows yet, but there are a few window trim decals...four for each window.

One thing I noticed was that there are no decals for the hood hinges, hood latches, or door hinges. I'll need to detail those with a detail pen.

So, the body will be wrapped up later this afternoon.

Here it is as of now.

We've had nothing but rain...daily.

All I need to do finish on this is to paint the front grille and the fender lamp housings with Tamiya's TS-17. Don't want to do that until the weather gets a bit nicer. Humidity is horrible right now.

well, there' a positive side to everything - at least you'll have some debris to crawl over...

man, a little wind and everyone freaks. 60 mph gusts are a common thing here in Oklahoma. Just about every decent storm will get those types of winds. Tornados, Ha!!!, I spit in thier face. We did have one a few years back on May 15th. I believe that single tornado traveled 30-40 miles, maybe futher, I do not remember where it ended for sure. It was a Strong F-5, and was rumored in the meteorologist's group that it may have been large enough to open up a new slot in the scale for measuring tornados, an F-6. Whether or not they did that I am unsure, but I do know that 10 miles away from that tornado, and I could see very large objects being hurled around like tiny blades of grass in a lawn mower deck. The wind 10 miles away was damaging barns and laying down a tree here and there. That was a wild day.

Hey jason have you ran it inside or no??

I brought the CR-01 to the East Coast Championships to run it on the comp courses and see how it'd do.

I didn't expect it to keep pace with the comp rigs, but I did expect it to be fairly capable. After seeing how the 11" wheelbase would've killed it on the comp courses I just drove it around and let others drive it as well.

Both photos by rbl.

This first shot is on a huge rock that several of the guys were playing on with the 2.2 and Super comp rigs. This is a steep incline. No camera tricks here...look at my feet/legs in relation to the truck. Remember, this is a stock CR-01 climbing this steep of a grade with a stick pack mounted on the chassis. With some axle-mounted batteries (or lowered battery placement) and a tad stiffer spring/thicker damper oil in the rear end it would have made the climb. :)

But for a bone stock rig with an 11 inch wheelbase, it didn't do too bad there. Again, no camera tricks here - look at my legs in the background.

This next shot is of a smooth, steep little rock that I was playing on. I drove up to it, eased into the throttle, and it crawled right up with just a slight hint of wheelspin. Someone made the comment that a bunch of the comp rigs did nothing but spin tires trying to get up that same rock.

So I wet the tires (soaked'm) and hit it again. Same result. The little CR-01 inched right up. A couple of guys brought their comp rigs over and tried the rock (one had claws, the other badlands) and spun tires. With a burst of throttle one of'm shot up it, but they just couldn't creep up the rock like the CR-01.

Interesting.

I let several people drive the little truck, all of them were impressed with the thing. The torsion bars do cause it to load/unload at odd times, resulting in a rollover, but once you learn how it handles it's a fun, capable truck. Everyone kept commenting on how smooth it was, how long it ran (ran it for a long time on a 3800 Ni-MH), and how the axles weren't as bulky and wide as they had thought.

A few folks actually commented that "I wasn't going to get one, but after seeing it, I'm ordering one when I get home." :D

I'm still waiting for my CR01 to arrive at my LHS. Should be next week. Can't wait!

How big was the wagon you had on it. I actully thought it looked good (different) or would be very funny to have one like that. I think I will put beer cans in mine or something.
