I am in the process of getting an Associated RC18T Kit. I'm not sure what kind of motor and ESC to put in it though. I'm pretty sure that I want to stick with a brushed motor. Just wanting to see if anyone had recommendations on what to get or not to get. Brushless is a possibility as long as it is not super expensive or uncontrollably fast.

good god no... take $120 out of ur budget right now and grab the Dynamite mini tazer 25A and C4 9300kv motor, they are freakin' crazy, even with the stock battery (but im running foams) and i'd guess it's near 45-50 mph
EDIT: lol, just re-read ur post and u can get a slighty slower version (8900kv i think it is) but also, depending on what radio u use u can turn the throttle wayyyy down until u want faster, and then just dial the throttle back up and u have as much power/speed u want!!! u could also gear it lower so it has more torque and less top speed... just my 2 cents

hey dont get the dynamite mini tazer, get the JWERKS ESC it is same as mini tazer yet for about $67 you get the JWERKS and a 6600kv motor whereas the dynamite mini tazer is $60 alone

both look like good ideas, but i've seen all different kinds of things happen to those ESC's...

I've had a Jwerks SC & 6600 in mine for over a year with no issues at all. It's a good set-up that don't cost a fortune. It's also not so crazy it's un-drivable, but still will go plenty fast. I would definitely suggest brushless. Way less maintenance & stronger performance.

+1 on BL, it's a whole lot easier to maintain just make sure u get high quality batts. or they'll blow from the amp draw... i learned that the hard way. but either way u go, i'd say it depends on where ur gonna drive, and how hard u drive, and how badly u wana own ricers with ur "lil toy car"

I run an LRP Quantum micro reverse AI, no micro motor limit and it's water proof. I still run the stock motor because this is my winter basher and sees a lot of snow, water and road salt. For batteries I run SMC 1400 seven cells or a 2100 lipo from Common Sence RC (talk about run time)
