View Full Version : I need a good BL system

I am thinking of getting a BL system for my Rustler. I am having trouble keeping the dang XL-5 speed control in good working order, so, rather than spend the $$$$ to get a new ESC, I think I will go with a brushless setup. I may in the future do the same with my tc-4, so I would want a very very fast and reliable system for that. I know there are alot of BL folks out there, and they know alot more about this stuff than I do, so can you give me your input on a good system? I think I may go traxxas velineon with the rusty, but what would be good for the tc-4. If and when I race it, it will be a very short track, like around a 20 straight. However, I will mostly be cruising the streets with blistering speed and acceleration. I am happy with my current setup on it right now though. Very fast and fun. It will die someday though and need a good hop up. My uncle has a Nitro 4-tec 3.3, and it tops out around 70mph. So, when a BL system falls into the tc-4, I want something I can run with him with, or perhaps even faster, just to make him mad:D

Well, you can't really buy a "bad" one. Maybe a 4600 or 5700 Mamba since when racing on tight track you will probably be limited to 2S and when racing "unc" you can put in a 3S. Hmm, better get the 5700. :p  70 mph
The nice thing is that they are all so universal that once you decide which voltage and rpm you need then choosing is a lot easier.

I know I am an idiot, but what is 2S and 3S???

Ha, my fault for thinking you'd use lipos. a 2S is a 2 cell battery and 3s is 3Cell. 7.4 volts and 11.1 volts.
Same procedure for nimh batteries really. You'd be limited to 6 cells (7.2 volts) on the track , but can go higher voltage on the street.

OIC, thanx, I kinda figured that but was not sure, to me a 2 cell would be a 2C not a 2S, so, ...

Yea, it is confusing.
The C stands for capacity (like 4000 mah) and the S stands for "series"
It is the number of cells hooked in series.

the velineon so far has been a very good system. no problems and runs very smooth. They are toward the low end now pricewise and can certainly handle the juice when you want to upgrade the battery. Only complaint i have is the ESC itself is fairly large.
i have a sensored novak 4800 system and it is super smooth, but i don't think it will take 11.1 volts. I really want a mamba system...since you can hook them up to a PC and fine tune, they are heaven to a geek like me!

^^^^ fyi mamba max is discontinued on tower, and the velineon i hear gives a lot of people trouble... IMO if u want to go higher than 8 cells, go velineon, but if u keep it 7 or under, that novak 4300ss and 5800ss systems are very, very nice

What is the difference between a sensored and sensorless system? I do not care how large the esc is, as long as it is dependable. I like the novak esc, I looked at a novak combo for like 280 bucks. I just want dependable but brutaly fast.

sensored is somther, and will not bog out or clough (area of no go when on the gas), and the sensorless systems have insane power (senored systems seem to be limited on power).
To me the sensored system is the better choice as they will make you life hassle free (unless a sensor wire comes undone), and the sensorless system will work best on using batteries with high voltage (8 cell Ni-Mh), or Li-Po's (they like the high voltage, as it allows the system to work better).

^^^^ good point about the battery style... IMO for brutal speed do the novak 3.4 or 4.5 or the hacker system that these guys put in : http://swami-rc.com/speedrecord.htm

well, if u can make it fit and get the pinion for it, a mamba max esc and a feigao motor wud b perfect, if not a mamba max 5700 system or traxxas velineon.
mamba can have heat probs but is generally easier to use and more eye friendly. its way tougher too. velineon can take higher gearing but has a stupidly designed esc and cheap endbell which only fits in the rusty and notin else. the button also gst stuck if dirt gets inside.
the mamba amx esc cans also b programmed on the computer which is a big advantage on the track. i reccomend the mamba max cos i have 4 of them and have never gone wrong. easy set up great fun but u rly need 3s lipo for either system to get up to n-4tec speeds

^^^ exactly y i say go with novak or the MMM and a fiego motor... what vehicle is this for again? LOL

wich esc would take the most voltage, and the tallest gears? I, again, will be looking for 70+ speeds. I know that the tc-4 will not drive very good with that kind of power and speed, but for staights, it would be nice to pace the nitro 4tec, and when he topps out, punch the throttle and rocket away. To be honest, I think I would perfur a 80+ car. I know I need voltage to acheive that, along with tall gears, but am unsure what esc can handle the load. I will be getting a sensorless motor cause you guys said they like "juice" and are not limited. Here is what the set up will drop in

hmmmm, idk about a tc3 goin that fast... but for speeds up there u'd need a low KV motor so u can gear it wicked high, like the Velineon system... i think u can hook the velineon motor up to a mamba max ESC and right there, on 3s and proper gearing u can get 80+ mph...
