So you hate your truck because you drove it hard and couldn't see that the spur gear was shot, and you posted here for us to diagnose that?

At some point the care and maintenance of your very complicated and expensive truck falls on you and your mechanical skills. It adds to the RC experience (hobby) to have knowledge and expertise that allows you to be your own best expert source of support.

Avoiding problems with preventative maintenance goes a long way to your overall satisfaction with your vehicle of choice.

AMEN TO THAT!! I AM MOSTLY SELF TAUGHT (WITH SOME HELP FROM FOURMS OF COURSE ). AND YES THIS HOBBY CAN BE VERY FRUSTRATING SOME TIMES BUT IF YOU OWN A CAR THE SAME PRINCAPLES APPLY CHANGE THE OIL GET GAS NEW TIRES AND SO ON BUT IF YOU LET THIS STUFF SLIDE WELL NO CAR.

Sorry for your problems. You mentioned aluminum shoes. In my experience with aluminum shoes there kinda grabby and I talked to one of the local Pros and he suggested combining the shoes. What I mean is us 2 aluminum and one stock shoe and make sure that you shim them. Better transition from stop to waaaa hooooo:eek::D

traxxas spur gears go out all the time (probably why they are like $4 each) Pick up a machined aluminum one. it will keep you from having another failure.
