Well I'm working on converting my CR01, it was nice and all but the Land Cruiser body is really to small for the track width and the really short wheelbase is very limited. We run a scale Modified Class here so I will be building to compete in that. So the body details won't be over the top since it will be a comp vehicle. I also plan to keep the weight down so a lexan body will be used and no steel cages.

I originally had no intentions of keeping the Coils, but it's a nice little touch and I think it's a one of the selling points of the CR01. So I'll keep them.

Really the kit is nice and like most Tamiya it includes great parts, but as usual the parts are just assembled wrong...LOL

So with some new chassis plates and a bit of redesign work I have what I think is a much nicer rig.

Now the disclaimer: This is proto-type, this is not the final cut, and the desing has already been altered and will be altered further after more testing. The yellow is a template, it will not be yellow.

Rip looks great man! so your compin it eh? your the first one i know to comp a cr-01...then again i have been busy in the lab with my wheely king the past couple of weeks so i am a lil behind! haha looks like it runs really good and the weight is credited where it's due. should run really well. btw whats your take on te rims? i bought some cr-01 rims for the wheely king until i get the funds up for a set of meyhems'.

Rims work good, they do slip under extreme conditions, but nothing major. But I think a foam gasket would stop any of that of course than something would probably break....LOL

I think the lack of grip is more of a concern these tires don't grip to well, but I'm hoping a dremel will fix that.

Yea I'm going to Comp this Rig, we run a Scale Modified Cl**** basically Scale trucks on roids, so this should be a good canidate with it's wheel speed and torque.

Well after I got back from vacation, I decided to do a little body work to relax.

First thing, those ugly fake roll bars had to go.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/CR01/loctite/001.jpg

Now I know this will be a comp rig, but I figured since the body posts are setup for a SUV, it might as well be one.

Well I masked and sprayed what I had left of some Orange Mist, ran the can dry. Followed with 3 coats of clear and some detail paint, I'll Age the paint tomorrow.

Oh and I put the windows in.

Yea I like the stock rims, very nice look and I'm yet to have them slip. I got tired of hubs, they look scale but get in the way when you work on it, this is a comp vehicle first show piece last. I went with rust where body damage already exsisted, and being an old EMaxx body there was plenty of body damage...LOL

Yea the CR01 comes with plenty of punch, the tranney has a great power range for a single speed. Tamiya did a great job with the tranney.

so did they come chrome and black like that or did you dye them? if you dyed them how easy is it to do?

Sorry been a busy summer around here.

The rims come black and chrome, I stripped them and painted them white and black.

The tires actually do very well on my terrain now that every other tread is gone. I ran a comp this last sunday and the truck did really well on pure rock, before that I had only tested on mud, sand, packed clay and loose dirt, so far these tires have handle it all very well and proven a great All-Terrain. Don't get me wrong though, I still love my M3 Mashers, but I won't be chunking these tamiya tires like I first planned to.

Truthfully I'm quite shocked at the lack of interest in the CR01, I think Tamiya screwed up releasing it with such a short WB and marketing it as a crawler. They really only hit a niche market with the LC body and the new Unimog body looks silly on this chassis. But with some mods this thing performs like no other and is a blast. The tranney is awesome and has so much punch and torque. This truck define fun, I wanted an Axial for my next Comp rig, but now I'm undecided, Tamiya did a great job on these parts, and the body is an awesome LExan Shell which will make a nice 1.9 build.
