I was watching the Monster Jam world finals on tv again the other night, and wanted to build a scale-ish monster that performed like the full size monsters. Big tires, big power and a soft suspension. So I shoehorned some clod tires onto my wheely king and started playing around with the wheelbase. I've ended up with a roughly 1/8 scale monster to be.
i used all associated links for the MGT that i had laying around, and they worked pretty good. For the upper links, i mounted a U bracket onto the back of the axle and bolted the links to it - this worked great and gave me clearance to mount the servo right on top of the axle. I machined out a bracket out of aluminum stock and mounted it on the screw holes in the back of the axle. A lot of work, bit it all came together perfect! i might do a second one as well for the rear axle.
these are some pics of the new steering set-up and the truck as a whole. I'd like to squeeze out another inch of WB and stand the shocks up a little further, but this was the test mule. So far it runs great! I have a Parma Baja body that looks like a monster truck body, i have to cut, mount and paint it yet. So far though, it's coming along well!

suprisingly good for a single motor. it's geared low, but still scoots around. I'll try and get a vid up when i get the body mounted.

hey i was forwarn you that the stock servo aint gunna hold up to the clod tires. i took an old set of cloddies and strapped them on my WK... servo died after doing a easy left to right hand turn

Looks great! I always wonder what a Wheely King would look like with Clod wheels. I also consider of putting my spare Clod tires on my Wheely King. What do you need to do to put those Clod tires? Will you be required to do a lot of changes to mount those huge Clod tires?

the stock servo is on the test mule, but struggles with the tires. It works, but it's not an ideal set-up - i have plans for a beefier one as i sort things out.
the clod tires bolted right on, i used integy clod 14mm adapters, which slip over the 12mm hubs on the clod axle. Since the king has 12mm hubs too, they fit right on! the barrel nut needs a few spacers though due to the shorter axle, i used some old plastic 5x11 bearings for now. i am also using metal hex hubs on the king axles to beef things up, but they work ok with the stock plastic ones.

got some more stuff done - this is such a fun truck.
i changed out the pinion and spur to a 32p tamiya gear and the largest t-maxx spur gear I could stuff in there. The gears are much beefier than the stock 48P gears, and the bigger spur gave me a much lower gear ratio for the big tires.
Also, i made some extended body mounts and put a monster truck type body on. I wish the WB was just a tad longer, I might made some mods.
All in all though, it's coming together rather well!

not bad, it's not a speed demon, but it has plenty of kick. I'll get a vid up as soon as the body is done.

well, i was originally thinking speedy modern monster truck, but seeing all these clods around, and since I had clod tires on it already, i decided to make an old school monster. THIS is the clod tamiya should make.
I fabbed up velcro body mounts using acrylic, aluminum and bras# tubing. Looks a little home depot, but is super solid and will all get painted black at some point. I mounted up the unsued bumper from my CC01, threw on a new coat of paint (original colors from the super clod days) on the old clod body, and voila - a retro look with modern underpinnings and much better performance.
I have a waterproof traxxas steering servo on the way, a water proof ESC ready to go on, and the truck should be fully waterproof and ready for mud and snow - if we get any this year. :)

you shoulda put rear steer on dare
i thought about it, but it's a fast enough that rear steer would make it pretty unstable, though i could have done some awesome cyclones in the snow!

Amen to that, lol. I might have something in mind for that ford body, though that takes away from the clodbuster theme. As far as anything else, no, not really. runs pretty good as is!
