View Full Version : Toyota scaler "clone"

I started this build because I was inspired by another members scaler on RCC (chino63). Deans Toyota rig was the most scale looking rig that I had scene to date, so I knew had to build my own.

I started with a mint Bruiser frame, and started building up. I used a trans and 4 link mount from Dean, which made the build super easy

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2063.jpg

I got some turned down TLT-1 shocks from a member of RCCrawler.com and painted them white and added a rancho stickers to them. My friend Kevin Good made the dual shock mounts, as well as the rear shock mount and tlt axle 4 link mount and new custom front body mount.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/chinoclone040.jpg

The body I purchased from another member of RCC. I wanted a realistic looking color and remember seeing a real trail rig Toyota on ebay in Brown, so I painted it walnut brown. I wanted the body to look like it has had some replacement parts installed, so using another members idea, I left the fender in primer and made the hood semi-flat black

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/truggy029.jpg

I am pretty well known for "custom interiors" and I wanted this one to have the most detail to date. I started with a stock Bruiser interior and started cutting. I dropped the floor down, and made a transmission tunnel. I then carpeted the floor with a thick self adhesive felt. The bench seat also got covered in felt, but a much thinner felt to maintain the details. The dash was cut out and gauges were installed just like a real Hilux. I also made the lower heat duct, as well as the heat ducts in the dash. I also made the lower gauge assembly with the oil and volts gauge. These all light up. I made the glove box latch knob, I carved out the dash and added the heating controls. I made a Sony CD deck with tuning and volume knobs, even a little eject button. I made the column with key cylinder, key lock release, hazard switch, wiper control. Dash has controls for lights, trip reset, and and cigarette lighter. Steering wheel was from a wild willy. Every good trail rig has a CB, so I made one of those too. I then made shifters, I turned down some styrene in a dremel with sand paper until I got the desired shape (just like the real truck) I then added Hurst racing shift knobs. Interior also has the gas, clutch, and brake pedals. I hand made everything from styrene.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/112_2341.jpg

Door panels were made with speakers, and window cranks, and the windows have the "rolled down" look to them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/112_2324.jpg

The wheels are custom 1.9 Bruiser builder wheels with the centers painted black. I also added vintage Kyosho 4runner center caps to hide the wheel nut

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/112_2327.jpg

I custom built rock sliders using solid 3/16 rod and bake line tubing, brazed together myself.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/112_2350.jpg

so the spec thus far are:

tlt axles with bearins, front axle shaved for a scaler look, rc4wd rear lock outs

Here is shot of the rear inner fender wells, they are simple, used styrene and box it all up, painted it flat black.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/clone019.jpg

Put my winch hook on too, its one of the wedico ones, I think it looks pretty good. I still have to paint the winch and mount the black control box some how
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/clone022.jpg

I have also been trying to think of cool things to have in the bed and tool box. In the tool box I have a MSD tow strap, my skate board :P, 2 shovels, an extra drive shaft assembly and 2 flash lights. I am going to make a wild willy NOS tank into a power tank very soon and mount that in the bed, I got to make the grab hand and stuff 1st. I also am going to mount the high lift jack in the bed as I think on top of the box was silly since its heavy and would be a bitch to lift the lid  I also have some coolers too to put in.

I finished up the details on my power tank, its a wild willy bottle of NOS, painted yellow, with the handle installed and an air line. All it really needs is a lil "powertanks" sticker.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2740.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2741.jpg

I also took a friends suggestions and mounted the high lift to the side of the bed

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2742.jpg

I also decided to mount some coolers, they hide the area well where the body mounts are. I am going to install some small little tie downs in the bed rails where there are already holes and add 2 more at the ends. So I can make some small straps and actually strap them in. I also added a little antenna on my box stock clod buster in the back.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2739.jpg

I also added some cool logos from Stefan @ scaleoffroad.com

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2745.jpg

I finally painted and mounted the control box as well for the winch

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2747.jpg

and just a poser shot

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2735.jpg

The red HL shocks have to go...I am hoping to get my anodized black ones soon. I also need to order some of the diamond plate from wedico to make a skid plate for my fuel cell underneath.

Thats it for now... I think this thing is *almost* done...

you can borrow it at moab ;)

Been working on the clone like crazy, getting it ready for Moab. my D rings came yesterday from my friend Kevin Good so I wire wheeled the bumpers and hit up home depot for some 3/16 square stock. Came home and brazed on some mounts and repainted the bumpers.

Dont mind the winch, its not mounted yet.

I also took off the rear 4 link bars and 4 link axle mount and painted all that stuff black

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2972.jpg

Interior is officially DONE, I am not taking it back out EVER  Its a total PIA with the door panels and what not. The arm rests are in, new factory toyota speakers with emblems on them from scaleoffroad. There is also a headliner with a dome light and a rear view mirror as well.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v73/ihaveabruiser/chino%20clone/100_2973.jpg
I am also trying out some MSD beadlocks, they are really really nice and hold the bead great... I am just not sure if they will stay as I think a beadlock on this truck is overkill, but since Its going to MOAB I dont want my tires falling off the rims every 2 seconds.

Where would you guys start if you were building a scaler?

mosty deffinitley chassis. a cc-01 tourage or a hi-lift chassis is the way to go. tcs has a x-trail chssis for the scorpion

http://www.tcscrawlers.com/TCS-X-Trail-Scale-Chassis-for-the-Axial-AX10-Scorpion-p-16556.html

this is a great way to get into it! but i would then start lookin into a good hard body. then shocks and and wheels and tires. uhh then lil accesory's like fire extinguishers and tool boxes and such! mike here has a ton of good ideas and i would also lead you to jason carter "aka" jasonC and rccrawler.com as well. tons of insight can be found there!:)

dezertrat94
02-03-2008, 01:27 AM
Now comes the tough question: how much dough do i have to put in to get a halfway (or all-the-way) decent scaler? I am on a semi-tight budget.

master_of_desaster
02-05-2008, 06:17 PM
well most guys make there own scale accesories with stuff around the house...the only stuff youll need to pay for is the actual truck, tires and wheels, electronics, and a motor and esc. then you can be as creative as you want. it can be as cheap as you want or as expensive. as long as you got inginuity and a good imagination you'll be fine!

Very sweet real yotas, would love to have the real deal but they dont exist here on LI...if I do see them they are typically rust buckets :(

This truck has gone through a bunch of changes, it now sports Bruiser axles using Rummy 12mm adapter parts, a new front bumper, new beadlock wheels, trail doc tires, fully leaf sprung, scale off road snorkel, new front bumper, rouge elements limited edition warn hubs and I am sure some other stuff that I am forgetting

that canvas top looks better than real ones on 1:1 trucks.
