That was a good write up of the cliff climber this month guys. I fully blame the excellent article for coercing me to order an CC ARR this morning.

However, i plan on immediately dissasembling it and using the axles for another project. I have a 4door jeep wrangler with full interior and i was trying to figure out how i was going to stuff a tranny in there and not hack the interior to bits. With the motors mounted on the axles, that takes care of that problem! let the build begin!! (well, in a few days when the magic UPS guy shows up)

on a side note, these are "low RPM" 380 motors. i downloaded the manuals and couldn't find any specs on them. has anyone ever tried running parallel 380's on a standard ESC? i cannot imagine that would blow anything up....but who knows!

i have seen it done in the past, since the 380 is about half the size and pulls about half the amps, a standard esc should be good enough

make sure to keep us updated on your build

Project Cliff Climber Unlimited underway!

I received the CC ARR and immediately tore it apart. nice axles - bearings would be nice, but very stout overall. I cut out a lower chassis from acrylic and polyurethane to fit a new bright Jeep 4 dr. body I had sitting here just waiting for axles. It had a nice interior, and I wasn't sure how I was going to get a tranny in there, but the 380's on the axles were perfect. i cut out the chassis to fit inside the body and it is coming together great! Everything is being mocked up here, lots of work to be done.

The jeep body. Is it a model, toy, or am I just plain confused.

the jeep body was from a 1/10 new bright RC. i took the body off and trashed the chassis. The interior looks great, needs quite a bit of paint and detail, but overall a pretty solid body. it's a much harder ABS then the Monster Mo so it should take sanding and paint much better. i like the green, but i have to sand down a few mold marks, so it's gonna go.

little more progress - I love 3 day weekends. got the shocks mounted and the suspension mostly sorted out. Project is coming together a little too easy, it's much nicer when you don't have to shoehorn a transmission in there somewhere. Tried out the stance with a set of 2.2 beadlocks that I think i'm going to keep on there, not sure yet. Tires look a little wide...hmm. I narrowed the axles slightly with smaller hubs, but the axles are still very long and stick out quite a bit. The chassis is pretty much ready for paint at this point, i have plenty of room for a std. battery and all the electronics. The painting and details on the body are going to take some time though, lots to do. i started sanding off the mold marks - tons of them on the body and bumpers and stuff. just about ready for primer.

thats sweet Oldschool! i really like the rims and tires on there! are the tires geolanders??

OldSchoolRC

thanks guys - yes, they are geo's with star cut foams on rc4wd beadlocks. I had them on my F-350, but upgraded to bigger shoes. I like them, but they are a little wide for this body, i am debating trying my tire narrowing skills for the first time and using a narrower set of BL's. As the budget allows of course. :)

finshed sanding the body tonight and filled in the corner markers with some filler, should be ready for some primer tomorrow!! i have 3 ABS bodies to paint, going to try and get them all with primer tomorrow.

interior time!!! This body has a sweet interior, I'm excited to work on some scale stuff. First time i have attempted a true scaler, so lots of new things to learn. (including patience, lol)

The only thing I didn't like about it was the seats looked very plastic-y and were hollow in the back. Not very real looking..so i used some R12 foam and carved out the seatbacks. I sanded them down and covered them with epoxy for strength, then sanded everything flush. Dirty job to be sure, but so far coming along well. I also removed the rear seat headrests, not sure why, I just didn't like them. I have them removed in my full size car too - go figure. Going to lay down a primer coat and then fill any remaining holes with filler. Other than that, the rest of the interior is all ready for paint.

The motors are 1000RPM per volt.

As stated in the article, I knew that the axles would be the big draw with the Cliff Climber. Just wish it had bearings.

Your build is looking good. Plan on putting LEDs in?

thanks for the kind words, and thanks for the info Jason..I was going to run this on 7.2 volts, but that might be a bit slow.

LED's maybe, the headlights have built in bezels, but the taillights would need something custom.

Try it on 8 cells.

TCScrawlers.com sells 8 cell, 2/3A packs that I've been using in a couple of crawlers.

With the tight space and all on your project they might just be the ticket.

OR...you could go to cheapbatterypacks.com and have them make a couple of 8 cell flat packs...or any combination of cells to get what you need to fit. I'd go with 2/3A cells on that build.

Depending on your ESC, you could also go with a 3-cell LiPo.

As for LEDs, go to www.radioshack.com and type in part number 276-270. I've used those before as tail lights on 1:18 builds.

The images no longer work, but the text with part numbers is still there..

Thanks for the info Jason - love the mini crawler build. With no center tranny, I have room for a standard size battery believe it or not. I do like the idea of the smaller packs though.

A little time in the paint booth and looking better! That olive green just had to go. I used textured black paint for the interior and it looks great, and standard jeep yellow for the outside. I'm still debating on painting the fender flares black, I have seen jeep pics with them the same as the body color, and some that are black - not sure which way I want to go yet.

Seats came out pretty well, using foam filled them in perfect and they are still pretty light overall.

Also, on my travels yesterday I picked up a 1/8 scale NB, hacked the chassis off, and will be building that one up later.

that jeep body is sweet, i think the wheel base on it is just alittle over 12.5, i know you will do great things with it.

thanks all - i'm pretty pleased with how well it is coming together. nothing custom except for the seats, it's amazing what a little paint can do. have to get back to the chassis again - my WB is just a tad too long for the body so i have to make some mods.

The truck has not fallen into the forgotten swamp of abadoned projects, been busy with some home remodelling in the meantime and no time for the RC lately. (though as a thanks for all the work around the house, my wife just picked me up Rock Band 2!!! ...should be a fun winter diversion..can you say best wife ever??)

i finshed and painted the chassis, modded and did some detail paint on the windows, and added a driver! She's lean and mean... :) pics coming as soon as i get my office back together.

back to sanding hardwood....:(

got some time to sneak into the workshop over the weekend, and did some painting. I cut out the front windows, but left the back ones and I painted all the window frames and chassis and started reassembling the body a bit. I added Toni, she'll be wheeling the jeep through the rough.. :) Still some detail to add to the interior, but finally moving forward again.

OldSchoolRC
11-19-2008, 12:09 PM
she's a manly girl - tattoo, bow for hunting critters, and a large bowie knife :) Although she is now legless to fit in the seat correctly, so she'll need some help getting around outside the jeep.

1/10 w/2.2's is the plan currently, i'd really like to use 1.9's or smaller, but need to work on the axles to make that happen.

progress, slow and steady, lol. I have 2 new additions to the OldSchool fleet as well, a Mercedes TB02 that's going to be a drifter and Jero CC01 that are fighting for time as well as a revamp of my Xtrail (moving to a droop setup and a new body). Working on all 4 at the same time, and hope to get some pics of them tonight.

Toni's promised to use her bow in a not so nice way if i don't get her ride finished soon though.
