Great choice, the Savage is an awesome nitro monster truck; you'll have tons of fun with it.

Companies spend a lot of time testing break-in procedures for their specific engines. Follow HPI's instructions on break-in that are outlined in the manual and you can't go wrong.

There are a few items you'll need to get it running such as fuel, fuel bottle, glow igniter, batteries, 7.2volt battery and a charger. With that said, you may want to pick-up HPI's Nitro Starter kit which will give you fuel, a rechargeable glow igniter and fuel bottle. For a 7.2 volt/ 6-cell battery pack, any pack is fine, just keep in mind a higher capacity will give you more use between charges and to charge the pack, you can't go wrong with any of the MRC Super Brain chargers.

For cool items to get, I'd order up HPI's battery level indicator and their rechargeable 5-cell receiver pack.

I dont ever feel the need to back up anything said by the crew but I can honestly tell you that you will have alot of fun with you new Savage. I am somewhere around my 8th Savage and have loved every minute of trigger pulling excitement. I wish you the best and hope you enjoy your new truck.

Greetings! Seeing that I have just finished the break in process on my Savage X SS truck, I can inform you of the mistakes I made as a newbie. First be patient, it will take at a few tanks to break in that 4.6 engine. After building mine I want run it ASAP. Make sure you have a stand that keeps the wheels of the ground during the break in process. I recommend using the pull start during the break in process rather than the roto start. The truck is much easier to start with the pull start in the beginning. I used 30% O'Donnell fuel. Make sure you have extra glow plugs you will go through one during the break in process. Be easy on the throttle during break in because to much throttle to fast will cause the engine to cut off. After 3 tanks on the stand getting on and off the throttle, then took the truck off the stand. For the next 3 tanks, I drove around in figure eights pattern getting on and off the throttle, and also working the brakes. Also, a couple of RC Car Action magazines ago, one the featured articles was tuning you nitro motor. I would advise reading that article as well. It was very informative for me, since I am new to the sport. Good Luck.

For your savage you should follow proper break-in procedure that should be provided in the included manual. Even if it does take 45 mins it is worth it because if you dont follow the correct procedure you could have serious engine problems later. For a first timer, some good upgrades might include a better radio/reciever for crisper engine response, new shocs depending on the type of terrain, an in-line fuel filter for any debris that might get through the tank filter, and possibly a really cool body for it. You can ask your hobby shop what other upgrades you might need, and anything that consistently breaks you should have spares for.

RPM arms, stronger steering servo, extra dog bones and a pipe. Other than that, the savage 4.6 is perfect out of the box.
