Well here she is ready for a rebuild. I've never been quite happy with this build. I got caught up in the whole hardbody thing and ended up building a top heavy rig that performed poorly. Sure in mud and on the trails it did great, but off camber terrain was suicide. Plus all the added weight hurt runtime and took it's toll on the axles.

At first I had hoped to use the current chassis with some modifications, but it just wasn't fitting under the body correctly.

So I found an old proto-type Aluminum HellCAT and started mocking it up.

Next, the shock towers, something simple, the red is the template not the final color.

I trimmed the shock towers to fit and cut an esc/rx plate.

Did you get the weight of the project previously for comparison to the new iteration?

I can relate to not being satisfied with projects sometimes. I revisit projects that I think are done regularly...

No, I don't have a digital scale that will weigh anything that heavy. My Mini-z scale cried at the thought...LOL

But I know it was top heavy and I know it will be lighter and the weight will be down low, but I do plan to add tire weights to this one so I'm not sure how much difference the final weight will be. But this rig will be a comp rig so the wieght needs to be down low. I usually revisit a project if I've torn it all to hell like this one, which is next in line.

Or if it collects dust because it's just not all that fun to drive, this one just wasn't all that fun to drive, sure it performed scale, but sometimes I want it to perform more "SUPER" than scale, I want to be able climb things and do things I'd never do in my 1:1 or could do in my 1:1, I guess I like Scale looks but I'm not so big on Scale performance.

Well I got sick, than busy, so several excuses later I'm way behind schedule and I need to get this rig done quick. So I put a roof on it yesterday.

Well I know I stalled on updates, but I just simply got real busy and with a Comp coming up I ended up rushing this thing at the last minute, so not many pics.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/tlts/OC3/0c3_016.jpg

I got it running for the comp, but I didn't have anytime for testing and well that proved to be bad at the comp. I did ok, but I never felt I had the full power, I have been using this drive train for quite a while so I know what it's capable of and it just wasn't there. I discovered at the comp I had a bad pinion and like an idiot forgot my 32p pinions.

The next day after the comp I completely tore down the rig to find the problems.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/tlts/OC3/0c3_017.jpg

I discovered a broken brush in the motor with the good pinion and 3 froze bearings in the tranney. The shocks still had very thick oil, the old OC had a very heavy body and cage. Also the tires were air tight with full foams, I felt like a retard for not checking these things prior to comp day.

So I decided to forget it all and move on. The Chassis looked good, but I felt it needed a bit more orange.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/tlts/OC3/0c3_018.jpg

I also gave all the parts a good cleaning and a fresh coat of paint and a clear lacquer.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/tlts/OC3/0c3_019.jpg

I just finished painting the servo mount and the body got a fresh coat of paint on the roof, I'll detail the scratches. I did have a problem with the paint sticking, not to the lexan, but to the primer, not sure but there maybe a bit of conflict with the Rustoleum Lacquer primer and duplicolor paint, but nothing I can do now, it's not flaking but the original mask did pull paint up, but it could be the cold weather keeping it from curing. No matter what Orange Crush will take an ass whooping so paint is a minor concern.

Well I got sometime sunday afternoon, I got thefoams cut, the rims weighted and the beadlocks assembled. I than put the chassis together.

I also detailed the shocks, amazing what some simple decals can do.

Wow shocks look good! Maybe that sand came from somewhere in Houston, Top Truck maybe?

Been 2780
12-08-2008, 07:05 PM
i think the sand came from inside the tires

Maxx man
12-08-2008, 07:44 PM
but the clumps have flat angles

ripper7777777

Thanks, and the sand came out of the foams when I cut the star pattern into them, I went through 5 xacto blades, the sand was hell on the little blades.

looks amazing i do have one grip though i would switch the shock to internal springs where its a scale rig i think that they would look a ton better just my opinion though

Well the thing is this not only a scale'ish rig, but a comp rig and I need to be able to adjust the springs, plus IMO external springs perform better with full spring setup, there is no droop in this setup. Otherwise I wouldn't use EMAXX shocks, I'd use something more scale. Just pretend I found a rare set of Giant Coil overs....LOL

Well the body is mounted, I aged the chips and scratches and add a minor amount of aging. I will let the chassis age naturally, it shouldn't take to long...LOL I wanted the truck to still have some shine, but not look showroom clean.

For this thing to truely look "scale' or "aged", you must quit forgetting good ol' fashioned bird droppings. Add some bird crap to the hood and windshield, and you will have a winner.

He's a member of the local club, we all posted snow pics.

You know, I've thought about it, but you know I've had some real shitty cars in the past and I always washed the bird crap off. I've also thought about bug splats.
