Well this all started with me buying a Tamiya CR01 for a few reasons, I wanted the Lexan Land Cruiser Shell, I wanted to see if I could design a better chassis for it, and well I like new toys....LOL

After I got it I quickly realised that a 2.2 at that short of a wheelbase was going to have issues and the Tamiya Chassis was about as good as it gets using the stock parts.

So I opted to design a longer wheelbase chassis, I prefer the longer wheelbase in a 2.2.

Since I couldn't use the stock LC body, well since I really wanted it for a 1.9 I decided to test styrene to lexan and build a body out of an old basher.

A couple links for those bored with nothing to do.

My original tests of the stock CR01 (http://ripper7racing.com/r7rforums/showthread.php?t=2838)

Loctite v1 build thread (http://ripper7racing.com/r7rforums/showthread.php?t=2890)

So anyways I bought the CR01 not expecting to much, but was actually quite pleased with it's performance, very over engineered but some great parts in the kit. Once I openned up the wheelbase the performance was greatly improved and hell I love broncos.

So I beat the crap out of the CR01 with the Bronco body, I really pushed it to the edge and over. The last time out I took it out to a GTG at Spring Creek Offroad park and really kicked the crap out of it on the Werock course. I'm talking 10, 15' falls down the concrete course, it was a rough day, but I knew it was the last day for the old girl.

This is the what I had left, the body was trash, but all in all I learned a lot about styrene to lexan builds and I'm quite impressed with the durability.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/CR01/loctite2/loctite2_004.jpg

I was originally thinking rubicon, but that day at spring creek a friend gave me his slightly used body, he didn't care for the way it looked on his 1.9 Rig. I thought it looked fine but I'm no fool a free body is a free body.

So I decided another bronco it will be.

This rig has been sitting waiting for a turn on the table and now that time has come, so after searching the internet for inspiration I ran across Mongo's Bronco (http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110604)

It reminded me of Stacey's Crazy Horse and that quickly got the project going.

No I won't be going purple nor compying either build, they are just inspiration and I have my own set of goals for this project.

So to avoid all the, "This is what you should do" I'll list my primary goals:

Use as much of the stock CR01 as possible, after all teh intial design was simply to be chassis plate replacements

Reuse a used body

THat's it, so I will be using the stock crappy suspension, the stock tires, the stock wheels, etc.

Sorry for the Long posts, Ive had a bit to much caffeine.................

Well that's a good idea, just two problems, this is a 2.2 Rig, the reason the original owner gave me the body was because it was to big for his 1.9 build and the primary goal is to use as much of the CR01 as possible.

The stock tires are ugly but once I cut them they started performing very well, as an all-terrain tire, they go from water and mud to rock quite well.

ripper7777777
12-16-2008, 12:33 AM
Well I managed to get a from minutes today to cut a new chassis, I lowered the tranney a bit, but not really to many changes from the original.

12-18-2008, 03:08 PM
Well I've been working on this in my spare time. I wasn't 100% sure what exactly I was going to do with the bed. I knew the chassis was going to be a problem, but like I said I want to use the stock CR01 suspension, so I have to work around it. I thought about just doing a bed cover, but I wanted a bit more. Some cargo and details would be cool.

So this is what I came up with.

The bed. As you can see it's form fitted around the chassis, which left some electronic issues, thus the holes.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/CR01/loctite2/loctite2_024.jpg

The Cargo. Still needs a lot of work, it's all very rough.

ripper7777777
12-23-2008, 12:28 PM
Thanks, I've learned alot from these used shells, I don't look at lexan bodies the same anymore.

Well it's time to add the interior panel, the stock tranney doens't allow much room so instead of building around it I decided to go with an interior panel, it should be deep enough to have a nice interior effect.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/CR01/loctite2/loctite2_035.jpg

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/CR01/loctite2/loctite2_034.jpg

Next I need to make some seats and than I can start detailing everything.

ripper7777777
12-23-2008, 04:30 PM
Well I had planned on using some seats out of a TOy car, but I wanted that racing seat look, so after looking around for alternatives, I came across thin aluminum ones being sold online. I figured I could make them in thicker plastic. After some design time and tweaking and a test cut I came up with these.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/CR01/loctite2/loctite2_036.jpg

Here is the test cut.

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/CR01/loctite2/loctite2_037.jpg

http://www.ripper7racing.com/myimages/CR01/loctite2/loctite2_038.jpg

and after some heat bending and some dremel shaping here is the seat backs, I still need to cut the length off to fit, I made them full size for future projects, this way I can design a seat and have a 2 piece racing seat.

After looking at one of my Tamiya Interiors I decided I wanted more details than just a black interior plate. So I made some seat bottoms.

I used styrene for these, I figured hand made would be quicker and easier.

Anyway. There's not much in SE PA either. Maybe we should organize a PA/NJ/MD meet/crawl/bash somewhere in the middle.

sorry, didn't mean to jack the thread - truck looks great! love the red detail of the spring mounts. Really sets off the chassis well. I'm cutting out a similiar chassis for my 1/8 rubicon body thats using all CR01 parts. in fact, it's my second one - first one i was not paying attention and drilled the upper link mounts slightly too close to the motor, which was the exact problem i was trying to resolve from the stock chassis. Love the transmission, but it takes up a lot of real estate down there.

No problem. The best thing to do is start a local club, I started in the TLT scene in 04 and I'm just now enjoying the local club scene, I should have started one sooner and not waited to run across people in the hobby.

how fast is it?

The CR01, it's pretty quick for a so called crawler or trail rig, but it's no stadium rig. The best part is it's quick and still has torque to go mudding or crawling, but the tranney is rather large compared to a Axial. But an Axial doesn't have the range that a CR01 tranney does.

ripper7777777
01-26-2009, 11:25 PM
Long time no update, but I have been working on it, it's just been really freakin cold in the garage so paint takes several days to cure hard enough for the next set of masks.

I'll do a quick rundown of what I've been doing and than I'll post the pics.

As you can see I painted the roof White, but the fun part was painting the inside of the roof.

I than clear coated it, about 4 or 5 coats.

I gave it a few days and came back and painted the inside of the bed and the inside of the body flat black.

I painted the grill and clear coated it, than installed the lights, no LED's yet, waiting to see if I add more lights before I begin to think about wiring.

Now it's time to finish the interior. Painted the dash red to match, more clear coat.

I added door panels to the body and put it all together.

The interior panel is removable for cleaning and if I decide to get stupid I can take it out and set it aside...LOL

Now to work on the bed items and the other details.

A Small update.

Bumpers and Brackets painted and installed.

Got the Jerry Can painted and the mount made and painted, it's amazing how much work the little details require.

Still need to:

Install the windows

Do the Details paint

Add the LEDs

A few pics from the test run out back.

So far the only problems is the loose springs and the 27t is a bit weak, it's all because of all the weight, this thing is a pig, I can't wait to put it to the test on a long hike and see what kind of run time it has. I'll probably get another pair of hard springs and a 35t motor. So far the CR01 has been one of my favorite platforms for Trail Rigs, it's not the most scale by any means but the axles are nice with plenty of options and the tranney produces speed and torque, very well designed, Tamiya hit a Homerun with this under appreciated rig.

If this ever goes in for another rebuild I'll probably go with some standard shocks and build a real performer instead of trying to use all the stock components, but sometimes it is fun to use the stock components just for the challenge in the design.

Enough boring talk, on to the pics.

Wow what a hike. Maybe a 12000mah Lipo and 85t lathe might make it. I wonder how much runtime that would be.
