View Full Version : Slash rebuild

While waiting for my parts for Mo to come in, finally gave the Slash a cleaning and rebuild. Nothing too fancy, new body and since I broke the steering rack I added an aluminum one. Highly recomended, took all the slop out of the steering!!
When tearing it down, i made a few changes. i swapped out the shock oil to 40wt (i believe the stock is 30?? feels stiffer anyway) all around and seems to tighten up the dampening just enough. With the stock oil, it seemed very light - this feels much more in control. I also noticed the rear suspension had a lot of play, so i shimmed everything up so it's night and tight. I gave everything a bath and used some spray on Teflon i picked up at lowes ilo regular oil on the sliders, suspension joints, and instead of grease in the tranny to see if it makes a difference keeping goop off the chassis. i don't know yet, but the tranny spins very free :) used it on the pinion and spur too, which i usually don't run anything on. Dries and leaves a "teflon" coating. Pretty sweet! I'll probably use this on nylon gears going forward ilo grease.
Swapped the mamba back in for bashing and did some painting. but not sure if i like how the body came out - Mobil 1 does not sponsor CORR, but if they did i guess this is what it would look like. It's really kinda boring......didn't realize how much body there was to cover. Thankfully, most CORR trucks use a fairly simple paint job... :):)

Body Pics..............too bad my decals were for a 1/10 body. They look tiny on here. S'ok, i'll just have to bash them off... :)
So, I have to ask. How are those Traxxas PowerCell Packs. Better than venom?
Nice Slash OldSchool :D

Dunno, never tried Venom. the 7 cells have pretty good kick, but i get better punch from my lipo. I like the batteries though, i got a pair with my EVX2 and they seem to work pretty well.
i ran 3 runs on the stock motor/ESC, then went to a Velineon for a while. The Mamba + 30c lipo is almost too much for it, it pulls wheelies on asphalt and those rear tires are starting to look decidely worn. :) The Velineon was much more controllable and still plenty fast. It's just in here for bashing around, i'll put the stock system back in for racing this summer. Haven't raced in a while, but the Slash is bringing me back.

well, i cannot afford a vinyl maker, so i use clear labels from staples, photoshop, then and print them out on my printer. i've used them for internal graphics too, though they are not stretchy, so they have limited use. You can see they are not shiny either, kinda stands out a bit....but as close as i am going to get.

A tip: I make labels that way to, but I also put adhesive lamination over the sticker sheet! Makes it shiny and protects the inkjet from scratching off! You can buy the lamination sheets at a craft store like Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Johanns, etc...

Got lights?
Wasn't too thrilled with the roof lights, so I took them back off. Front light look great though! Have to find some 3mm LED's to finish them off.

Slash no more!
Figured since I picked up the Blitz, I could turn the Slash into a true basher. :) A Jconcepts Gladiator body was perfect, and allows me to use full size 2.2's for more ground clearance. Added some Moabs I had laying around on narrowed RPM rims I had left over from the SX4 build. Body needs paint yet, but looking good!! Funny thing about the body, it did not come with decals for the headlights and grill. Not sure if that's a screwup or not, have to drop an e-mail to Jconcepts.
Kinda like a 'pede on steroids:

Some pics with the rusty! and a new addition to the family. :):)
Some stats: the rusty is set up with a mamba 5700, the Orange Slash with a Velineon and the Slash 4x4 will also have a Velineon, as soon as I liberate it from another vehicle. Will get that body mounted and electronics in shortly.
Brothers in Orange...the Rusty is a tribute to my old blitzer beetle.

Still have to tweak the body mounts, sits a little high in the back.

very nice OS! how did you get the bug body to fit the rusty?
OldSchoolRC
02-24-2010, 09:20 AM
The front body mounts are stock, the rear is a slash/stampede mount. I carefully cut off the posts that were molded on, drilled holes and put on some longer ones from axial I think.

hey, how do you like the sidewinder system? i dropped one in my slash and i use a 5000mah nimh 7 cell and get pretty good top speeds and tons of great low end acceleration and torque. i want to get a lipo for it but don't have the fundage at the moment.
OldSchoolRC

I have the mamba max w/5700 - very similiar.
It was fast in the slash, no doubt, but it really ran hot. Ended up taking it out and sticking with the VXL. Ran much better overall. Slash is a pretty heavy truck and the 5700 motor just didn't have the torque needed.
