View Full Version : 4wd Slash Build

OK, no pics of any progress yet, but thought I’d get the thread started! :)
So far I have a WK axle, a sheet of 6061 3mm aluminum, a few odd suspension pieces, a wing and a prayer. Trying to do this on the cheap as much as possible using what I can find in my parts bin, but I need lots of odds and ends. So far this is what the plan is:
MTSS front bulkhead and differential (same gears as the WK axle so the ratios f/r stay the same)
MTSS shock tower
Duratrax Maximum ST front arms, knuckles, c-hubs and steering rack. Seem to be the right width, or close enough to work with
WK, axial or Stampede transmission. Debating. I like the axial since it’s nice and compact, and you can get them with a slipper now. I do have a tamiya 3 speed laying here though…hmm.
Pro-Line Hardcorr body
Shocks..wheels, and everything else TBD. Figure it out as I build.
Ordered the MTSS Diff parts this afternoon, found them on the bay nice and cheap. I could have stolen them out of my SNRS4 Rally that has yet to hit the pavement, but didn’t have the heart to do it. Spent the $12 instead. Going to measure out the axle and order some 12mm axle extenders tonight, as well as the rest of the HPI MT parts tress I need. Once they come in I should have all I need to start mocking up!

Hurray! a 3-speed-solid-axle machine would definetly be unique, but would the
extra servo be worth the extra weight. this is gonna be one cool build!
OldSchoolRC
04-14-2009, 03:07 PM
That would be unique!! not ruling it out, but i want to run brushless and not sure how it would hold up to the weight/power. At least that would get my gearing in the ballpark, If i run an axial, wk or stampede tranny, have to do something about the gear ratios. Going to be way too high since they are designed run with much taller tires. Traxxas would probably the most flexible of the bunch as far as gearing options, have to think about it. Nice to be thinking about gearing up for a change! :)

sweet! cant wait for this project to kick off!
LSXEric
04-14-2009, 05:55 PM
With brushless power, get the pede tranny. An axial does good to a point in speed, a WK tranny sits high, and not very strong. A pede is proven in power department. A 3 speed, humm...
OldSchoolRC
04-14-2009, 10:19 PM
could clock the wk tranny or lay it on its side....has all metal gears, and handled monster mo just fine.... OR i might be working on option E if i can source the parts cheap enough. :D
OldSchoolRC
04-14-2009, 10:44 PM
plan E in full effect....for what i spent on the tranny, I could have almost picked up a slash roller. So much for the budget build! but I solved my gearing issue. Stock traxxas is right around 13:1, i'll be in at 13.55:1.
here's a teaser...mod 1 pinions?
OldSchoolRC
04-14-2009, 11:08 PM
ok, now i have spent more than a stock slash. So much for the budget build....turns out I didn't have as many parts as I thought. Ordered:
NRS4 Evo complete diff
2 sets of ring and pinion gears (the Evo set comes with a different internal ratio)
15mm hub extenders for the wk axle (expensive!)
mystery transmission (painfully expensive, but oh so cool)
couple of pinions
HPI MT carbon fiber shock tower
WK parts to convert the output shaft on the diff to use a maxx slider instead.
rods, br**** and some other odds and ends.
Getting excited, now just have to wait until all the parts come in. And put in some serious OT over the next week! Still have to pick up body, wheels and shocks, but don't need them for a while yet.
Started working on chassis design, have to wait till the parts get here though, but have the back 1/2 drawn up and ready to cut.

ok, parts are rolling in, though my tower order just shipped yesterday, and my RCMonster order is somewhere travelling acorss the fruited plains.
Got the transmission and front gearbox though, and have a problem with the tranny. RRRR...I'll get some pics up shortly.

Rc4wd killer transfer case?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! ?!?!?!?!?!?!?
OldSchoolRC
04-18-2009, 10:56 PM
nah, need speed!
ok, so the parts are rolling in! Mystery transmission in full effect. It's an Ofna GTP center tranny with an RC Monster electric motor mount.
I didn't want to use a pede or axial center tranny as i have to account for the axles gear ratio and i would have really had to gear it up. This way, i can use a single pinion and spur and combined with the axle reduction i'm at 13.55:1 compared to 13:1 for my current slash gearing - exactly where i wan to be. Simple and plenty strong...and, i get a center diff out of the deal, which has it's pros and cons, but I think it'll work out good.
1 problem - my old ofna had 5mm shafts that the drive cups bolted to. My plan was to take off the cups and hook up some pede or maxx driveshafts to it. This one has the drive cup and shaft all as one piece so i'll have to custom build the output shafts for the diff. RRRR!!
some pics of the parts as they are coming together. gotta flip the king axle, right now they'd run in opposide directions...not good!
Maxx man
04-19-2009, 12:12 AM

this is gunna be a tough build...
OldSchoolRC
04-19-2009, 06:58 PM
to quote Reuben from one of my favorite movies "If it was easy, it would just be the way" lol!
Tore it apart and I got the center diff all figured out on to attach maxx/pede shafts....just have to machine new output shafts to replace the diff cups and it's easier than I thought. Thankfully, the outputs are 5mm so i have plenty of tamiya shafts laying around that i can use.

there is always a way - what are you trying to figure out?
roadrunnr43
04-20-2009, 09:16 AM
converting revo shafts to a DTX nitro evader transmission/outdrives,
wich then connect to an AX10 axle.
OldSchoolRC
04-20-2009, 01:14 PM
hmmm..out of luck on that one, i know the nitro evager uses a ball diff, and the diff rings and drive cups are all one piece. not much you can do with that one. Only thing that might work is to find a diff the same size that has output shafts. I believe it could be done with the Evader EXB diff which is a gear diff, but it would take some machine work to cut down new output shafts to replace the ball cups - that's the exact same thing i am doing with the ofna diff. Think you'd be better off with an axial/pede tranny though. Till you source the parts and do all the work, might be cheaper in the long run.

Can i rant for a second? Tower shipped my order via USPS this time ilo UPS. UPS has orders to my door in 3 days from Il, with basic ground shipping, and tracking all the way so i can see where it is - every order, all the time. It has now been six days with no tracking and i have no idea when or where my parts will be delivered....just says "Billing info received" on the website. Of course, this is the same USPS that took 9 DAYS to ship me a package from Philly, which is a 45 minute drive from my house. I'd have been better off driving down and getting it myself in about 90 minutes.
ok end rant. Feel much better. Will have some updates later tongiht.

got the outdrives built for the transmission, used some 5mm shafts, my drill, a hacksaw and some pure luck and got everything cut and drilled out fairly straight. Using a maxx shaft to the rear axle and a pede shaft for the front. I need the smaller shaft in front to clear the steering drag link. I cleaned out the diff and filled it with 7k silicone also. Should be nice and solid.
just waiting on my parts from the USPS to hook up the front.... Site is updated, they rolled into jersey 3 days ago. Apparently it takes 4 days to ship an item 52 miles. (if it arrives tomorrow) GRRRRRR
original is on top, new ones are on the bottom.

rant time again - what a fiasco....it took 1 day - 1 DAY for UPS to pick up my tower order and ship it all the way from IL to NJ and turn it over to the USPS, where the government geared up, red tape flew, and the molasses of the sticky bowels of the post office kicked in.
It has taken the postal service 3 DAYS to send it from Logan, NJ to Philadelphia's postal center. 3 days to go 15 miles!!! It is now sitting in philly as of today..
First off, these are "parts express" parts, reduced shipping - now i know why, but let's call it parts "cheap" as the "express" is totally out the window at this point. My expected delivery date was 2 days ago.
Seriously, UPS could have dropped it from the plane as they overflew my house on the way to jersey, and I would have had it 4 days ago.

OldSchoolRC

ok, apparently the website is wrong - according to it, the parts arrived in philly yesterday...they were at my house instead.. ??? enough ranting!
started working on the front, i pulled the gears out of the RS4 EVO gearbox and dropped in the new WK gears. Check out the gear in the evo....toothed on both sides - makes me wonder if HPI will have a losi set-up at some point?
Ground down the outdrive and drilled it out for the pede shaft, and put it all back together. Added a carbon front suspension tower and was playing with the pinion and motor set-up. Not sure if i like how the motor is sitting in there, might try and flip that around and have it face the front.
put the suspension arms on in the front and do not have swing shafts long enough, have to do some shopping or come up with plan B.
funky HPI gear

funny i have officially called the project 'SlashX' though there will be nothing from a stock Slash on it except the front driveshaft. it's the spirit that counts... :)
i have a virgin piece of 6061 3mm aluminum waiting to be cut, hopefully starting this weekend. Hoping to get it right the first time!!
ordered the body, switch tires, (and a few goodies for the original slash - busted a shock tower this weekend. First broken part not counting the steering, but that was my fault.) and found some 90mm driveshafts that i really hope will work. May still be a little short, but everything else was too long.

Bottom chassis cut....I fubar'ed the one side with the holes, they are all out of whack, but i figured out a better way to do it and the other side came out much better. good for now...but it really bothers me. Holes are for attaching stuff (cage?) and really just for looks otherwise to break up all the aluminum. Put the 2 pieces of the chassis together to see how it looks... i cut everything a little long, so it need some trimming but starting to come together!

Got a front end! Got my 90mm swingshafts and they didn't fit the drive cups, but as i was mocking it up, the front track came out a little wider than i thought so i used some tamiya suspension arms and some old swingshafts and everything lined up fine. Also got the steering rack shoehorned in and a servo mounted. Just need an upper deck to tie it all together.

update!
got a little more done last night, the axle was pulled apart and rebuild with fresh gears and properly shimmed. Then i worked out the links and got it installed. I cut it really close on the chassis length and transmission location, but it just tucks in the back. I was worried that the driveshaft angle is too steep, and it's very close but so far it moves through it's range w/o binding.
Added rear shocks and cut up a piece of delrin for the battery holder. I plan on running a lipo so I'm not super worried about the weight and location, though for some reason i keep thinking i need the weight over the back axles - with 4wd, i don't at all - have to get out of that 2wd mindset!
have to make a top deck in the font of the chassis and start thinking about body mounting. Then i can take it all back apart for painting/finishing.
Very, very happy with how this is coming.

Got a little more time in with the SX4...
I "machined" out the battery plate, and mounted the battery holders. I used only hand tools and it's my first attempt at it, so it's a little hack. Practice makes perfect though.. :o Really lightened up the plate, and the battery will cover it. I drilled out 3 spots for the battery so i can move it back and forth as a tuning tool, or mount a 7 cell pack.
I took off the center diff plate and made a new one out of aluminum. This doubles as a ESC mount as well as giving a nice spot to mount the top deck.
Speaking of, I took a page from my other tubing builds and the top deck is made out of plain old brass tubing. Light and plenty strong enough, I just cut up a few pieces to triangulate where needed, bent it up a bit and bolted it all down. I was going to make some sort of plate here, but i started messing with the tubing and it just sort of fell together. Glad it did, I think the tube set-up just plain looks cooler .
Just need some body mounts, then tear it all back down for some finish work and paint. Most of the chassis is going to end up black.
feeling the progress!!! :):)

Tore it all down to do some finishing details and shot the chassis flat black. Put it all back together and added the electronics...ready to run if it were not pouring outside. But it sure looks nice on the workbench!
i opened up the lower chassis to lose some weight, though I'm wondering if i need some protection down there. Might have opened it too far. Bottom of the chassis is fully countersunk, and a few extra holes... :)

Hey man, that is a very nice rig. I love the outcome. I do have to agree with everyone, it does look production made. Your skills are improving young grasshopper. The monster mo started a bit heavy and exessive, but ended nicely as well. I think by far this is the best build I have seen from anyone, and it is not that difficult to do really. But what you end up with when alls said and done is a simply amazing 4wd truck that is not only killer to look at, but looks to be killer on the track as well. I hope you have alot of great fun with it, and try not to destroy it before a video is released. Good luck, Phil

the rear has slightly more droop than the front, but I'm out of room to go any further. The driveshaft binds if i drop any lower.

Starting on the body tonight, i have about 6 bodies waiting to be painted (Revo, Baja, Fighter, F-150, SX4, and a Hummer) - not sure i'f i'm going to tackle them all at once or not. small update...body cut, but not yet mounted. I was going to use Epic wheels, but i didn't like the way they looked so picked up a set of Revolvers.....i could do better, but I'm broke and they are cheap, so that's what I'm sticking with.
2 issues with the wheels - i have to cut off the inside bead to better fit the tires as well as clear the front steering knuckle. That's no problem. The second is that they are real thick in the steering hex - so thick that i cannot get wheel nuts on the axle. No idea why, seems like a bad design to me. I'll have to drill them down or find some barrel nuts.
Couple pics with the body and wheels on. the fronts will tuck better once i do some trimming. the backs fit perfect, and i like that the deeper dish wheels are in the back.

The 2wd'er is coming along well though, finished off the chassis for the most part and just need to find some steering posts and get rid of the wide-pede set-up and she's a runner. Hey man, it looks good to me. As long as you are happy, that is all that matters anyway. Now, back to that 4wd build, I can not wait to see how you complete it. The body is looking great, I love the wheel choice, and once you get them trimmed and get them moved in some, this insaine ride will be the envy of any RC enthusiast. Great work Oldschool, keep with the roll your on.
I am hoping to start a brushless truggy based loosly on either a tc4/5 or maxx/revo. Bulkhead and diff wise. I am watching you closely to get ideas (no, I ain't coping, lol). I think I will start with a body to get my dementions, build a testor chassis from cardboard, then find what works best for diffs/a arms/bulkheads. sorry for the thread jack, I am done now.

thanks man! I have project ADD, I tend to bust hump on something for a while, then get bored and put it on the shelf and work on something else...4wd'er will be getting finished here at some point.
i have a brushless buggy/truggy on the drawing board as well, maxx diffs and drivetrain, that's all i really have for now. Maxx parts are great as they are super easy to work with - the bulkheads have flats on top and bottom so they are easy to build custom chassis for. just my 2 cents! :)

I just want something light, and durable. I am not sure that a sedan diff will work for offroad, so I may look into ae, or hpi truggy/buggy diffs. I have not lost sight of the maxx diffs, I think I could use them, just got to find out if they make a cup to hook into the TC4 style drive line. That is the route I want to take. Less weight, less moving parts. Again, sorry for the thread jacking.

Bad news is it rolled off my workbench and fell in the back busting up some of the brass joints....RRRRRR. Have to strip and re-solder those spots, and maybe beef them up too. Debating getting a standard body and mounting it on there for bashing/track action, and leaving this body set-up for fun running. I want to run this, and it'll take some time to re-do the metal work....plus, it's certainly a lot heavier with all the brass in the back. Love the look though.

Well, it doesn't look like much, but it's all the workings of an interior... :) now just have to start cutting!
oh, and got my Desert Rat, opened it up, and a hardcore body was in there... ?? (you can see it in the first pic) Desert rat on the package, desert rat decals inside...hmm. Calling tower tomorrow, this is an interesting issue.

Finally out of my RC funk and back to building....my first interior! Getting started anyway. Never designed the chassis for an interior, and not about to start over at this point, so have to work around a few things. The WW driver is perfect as his head is about the right size, but the body is small so when mounted in the body he'll fit in there, look fairly decent even though it's out of proportion and I don't have to go too deep with the interior.
Started with the floor and some roll cage. Most of it will be hidden under the body, so it's pretty simple. Have to build up the dash and then I can start detailing.

Little more work done...realized the deadline for this is fast coming, so have to get a move on!! Made a racing seat for the driver, added the tunnel (needed to clear the chassis) and started working on the dash.
Screws will be hidden once I add some foam

From the back...having to make some compromises for the chassis design, though i have some room to trim everything out.

Rolling along...seeing the light at the end of the tunnel here. Got the center stack done, added some "toggle switches" and started sanding and filling and almost ready to start painting and detailing. There are a few more parts to the cage, but they bolt on, have them off for painting. the whole thing is pretty strong, and will mount in the body with velcro so I can take it out if needed.

Love the gun metal. Just one thought though. 'Bout 10 years ago mattel had some plastic car model kits that were in the form of rat rods. They had that big crazy headed guy popping way out of the top of the roadsters. He was always holding a giant shifter, and a huge steering wheel that also patruded from the car. You know the ones I am speaking of.....You should get ya one of those crazy headed guys to "mock up" in there for a goof. It would be awsome. And thanks for the tip on the back issue of RCD. I am looking into getting that back issue so I can read up on it.

down to the finishing touches, left myself next weekend to get a vid up and posted.
Made a swaybar...fabbed up a few mounts, bent some music wire, and brazed on some 5mm rod ends. Works great on the bench, allows for some twist but really tightens up the back. See how it works out in the dirt.

Sad thing is once the buildoff is over, pulling the electronics and it's going on the shelf for a while. I want to re-do the chassis for more performance - longer suspension arms in the rear, lighter chassis, etc so it's all coming apart. As it stands with the interior and tubework, this thing is a pig and more for show than go. i do plan to beat on it first though.. :) Gotta find the weak points.

Drives good! Well planted overall, 4wd is far easier to drive, only issue is on turn in, it digs in hard, then pushes a bit, just needs some tuning but overall very happy with it.
Body, interior and cage are coming off and going on the shelf - now for display only. Swapping out for a plain lexan body for running.

Glad I found an original MT, my 1 way fits! Bought it for the HPI trophy, but the outdrives are the larger MT2 style, so it's been sitting in a parts box. Also, I like the front shock set-up much better than the MT2's. Already have HD ring and pinion gears to go in, the front gears are stripped in this build - learned the hard way.
