well as i was down state for my new nephew being born i stopped at mejier to pick up some stuff for my brother and sister in law, and i walked down the toy isle and found the LD3, this is going be a slow going build but i think it is going turn out sweet.
so far i just have the body and tires that i had, 1.9 mud thrashers. come Friday i should be ordering some tlt axles and i still have to decide on what tanny i want. i am thinking ether axial, r2 from rc4x4 or a stampede ( what esle is there right? lol). it is going be a home made chassis. and i will add more stuff when times comes.
here are some pictures i took case i was bored today.
this is what it is going look like with the tires i have to it, the ride hight is going be just a little big taller but not by much

and this i just thought was a cool angle

Not notatoy and texx...
Looks fun, I'd say an AX-10 tranny would be the best bet. TLT axles and R2 trans are geared way low, you'd need a faster motor. A pede tranny is one way to go, but its big.

here is a little update, made the frame, it is out of alum angle and the sides from the ax-10. the tranny is my from my stampede, really debated on that or not and scene it has been sitting there for the past 6 mouths its being used lol. i have some tlt axles on the way thanks to STUCK. they should be here some time next week. well on to the pictures.

this picture just shows how low i got it, i dont like to show too much of the frame from the side. so i think this worked out great.

no not at all it is all aluminum, the only thing that makes it heavy is the trany and the motor. hope fully i will be getting my axles some time this week.

dude, we must be shopping at the same stores, I am building up that exact same body as we speak. Had it for years and finally decided to do something with it. Painted it last summer and was just waiting for a chassis for it. I had it on a custom chassis, and with TLT's under there it looks pretty much perfect as a scaler. Changed my mind though and stole the axles for something else and it sat on the shelf until this saturday - now building on an XC chassis which is a perfect fit, I'll get some pics up tonight.
and I have the EXACT same wheel/tire combo on mine....kinda eerie. :)
We had the same NB jeep a while ago too if i remember correctly (though mine is still on the "to do" list.)

Yes.
I like it. I'm pissed at scale tho right now. I did so bad today, I'm sick of my scaler. It wheels like crap.

:update:
well it is some what of a roller now. have all the links and shocks hooked up. bought some SDI fenders. i think they look sweet on it and some trail DR but stupid me only bought 2 (thought they came in packs of two). now for the rims i don't know what to go with. ether rc4wd steel bead locks or the rims i have on there now. hope fully the next post it will be moving on it down power.
this was with the springs installed. i think it is a little too much for the tires
http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq145/bugz2002/Range%20Rover/IMG_0380.jpg
this is better. running a droop but thinking about getting the 80mm rc4wd scale shocks

Run revo rod ends. Short links are okay, as long as the geometry is right.

building links is no fun, but it's pretty easy if you take your time. i usually pick up a set of traxxas rod ends for the stampede, some 4/40 threaded rod and 3/16" brake tubing.
my homegrowth way to do it is lay the truck out exactly how i want it to sit at ride height with wheels and everything on the axles. then, measure the distance eye to eye between your link mounts on the chassis and axles. You only have to do it on 1 side, and measure top and bottom links front and rear. When done, you should have 4 measurements...then, lay out your ball ends based on your measurements and from there, you can get the measurements of the 4/40 rod and the tubing lengths. I usually just eyeball them at that point. Then cut and assemble!
Just remember to make 2 each, mark them as you go as to where they go on the chassis, and when making 2 for each measurement, pay very close attention to the tubing lengths and make sure they are the same so the axle does not get funky geometry. also, i tend to cut mine a smidge long and trim them down later to fine tune...much easier to trim down than to cut all new pieces.
hope that helps!!!

I just discovered 5/32" brass rod. its a much closer fit than brake tubing.
Im not sure if its cheaper, (the receipt from the LHS list several "misc." items.) but overall its nice to work with.

Humm you guys are scardy cats!:) Upgrade to 8/32 thread with 1/4in tubing and jato/ revo long ends! Very strong, since I've broken too many 4/40 ends.
OldSchoolRC

good stuff for a bigger build, but for smaller 1/10 scalers, I prefer the smaller diameter of the 3/8 tubing. Reason for the 3/8 brake line is it is cheap, strong, and matches the diameter of the rods ends pretty closely.

I am using 3/8ths Stainless Steel soap line from my job sites. They throw away a bunch of it and I just grab it up and straighten out what I can, cut it so I can store it more easily, and when I need a peice, I just grab one, cut it down to leanth. It is very thick, very strong, and is extreamly difficult to bend straight by hand. I end up with a nice strong link when finished, and I will break off the rod ends before the S.S. line bends. Best part is, all I got in it is the cost of a tubing cutter, 5 bucks. I can get more if anyone needs some. Heres a pic, kinda bad lighting, but you can get the idea.

I also got some larger I.D. stuff too. Be good for larger builds

i think i did pretty good on the links this time but i think my problem is that i didnt center the tranny part right. so the back links are shorter then the front and it just looks funny. and thanks guys for all the tips they do help. and sence i dont have a hobby shop with in 80 miles of me these forums help out A LOT.

so a long a waited up date. i was going to give up on the LR3 but just count find anyone to buy it from me. but its was a good thing. i broke my roll cage on my jeep, and the body is kinda of messed up but the front is still good (anyone want a jeep JK front end?). so i fit the LR3 body on the xtrail. i need to get smaller links but for now this will work. yes i know it is on 2.2s but thats all i had right now. well heres the pictures.
