I scored a TA02 hummer off the bay for $60 - all it needed was a new rear diff and a little love. I'm going to keep the hummer body, and I wanted to build this up as a trail truck, and improve the basic TA02 chassis for more off road capability. I've seen quite a few with a center tranny set-up and decided to put my own twist on it...

first off, the rear trans case needed to be modded. I shaved down the spur gear since the spur part was no longer needed, and shaved down the case as well to get it out of the way and gain some ground clearance. I covered the hole with styrene that i eventually painted black. I made new outdrives to accept axial universals. The rear ball diff got put in the parts box, and i JB welded 2 gear diffs i had and dropped them in.

Then, I sat down with all the parts and designed up a chassis. i figured it was pretty close to a T-maxx style, so i had that in my mind when designing.

then, lots of drilling, sanding and fitting and a new chassis is born! top plate and steering plate

Skid plates added, and 2 pieces of delrin tie the skids to the top chassis. This thing is a rock, no flex at all.

close up of the steering - tight, but it's all in there.

Tranny added

bottom view of the chassis - i'll need a center skid befire i hit the rocks.

next up - putting the suspension back together, finding a pair of shocks that will give me more travel, and finishing the driveline. need to order some stuff as soon as i find the $$....very happy with this project so far!

Suspension back on, and bolted on a set of wheels just messing around. I kind of like the MRC's on there.

Removed the spacers for the shocks to add a little more droop. Springs are WAY stiff and it's really riding high

Mandatory flex shot. Has more, but the springs are too stiff.

Ended up with 65mm ground clearance in the very center....

Side view. Battery is going right up front.

Just messing with the body, it's just laying on the tires. It's pretty beat, but it's a budget build and it'll have to do. Think a little paint will do wonders.

Not the best pics, but filled in the hole in the top and started converting the body to a truck bed. I'm not a body guy per-se, but i'm really starting to like styrene. :)

got the chassis sorted out and have a roller!

I had to cut a little off the chassis for clearance and clocked the tranny for better angle with the outputs. I dug out some old kyosho parts and some swingshafts to connect the transmissions - this was a little easier than drilling and pinning for universals and should hold up just fine. Standard silver can motor should work good here - I'm going to need a little more speed - it's geared way, way low. Going to be a creeper.

Body in primer...need to sand down and fill a few more spots and get it painted. Fab up some body mounts and ready for the trail! May add some new bumpers, not sure yet.

finally got some paint on! Painted it like the hummer I used to drive for work. That one was a softtop, and if I had thought about it for more than a second, I would have modeled the softtop better. No matter, I like how it is coming together. Still need to do the detail work, body mounts and front bumper, this is a sloooowwww project!

I need to learn styrine (however it is spelled). It would really help me on bumpers and such. Get a much better scale look. Where do you get it at? I found lexan, plexiglas and some thin aluminum, to thin for a main chassis plate at Lowes. But I have not looked at Home Depot yet.
I like the way this is turning out, I am not a Hummer guy, but this look narly. Good job man, hope it runs well for ya, and there ain't nothin wrong with a creeper, not many parts break that way, lol. Later, Phil

Styrene cound be found at nearly any hobby shop. Cool stuff though it takes some practice, that's for sure. :)

at shops they have them, but at mine, i was looking for a sheet of lexan but the prices were so ridiculous from there supplier that they recommend going to a window place.

Front bumper added.....also doubles as a body mount - just down to details and finally out on the rocks. Diasbled the flash so the real color comes out.

Well, i still have a lot of detail work to finish - rear window, wheelwells, bumpers, etc, but decided to take it out for a trail run. A little underwhelmed, defintely needs some tuning. Wheelspeed is good, a little too much actually - thought I'd be way low with the axial tranny on there, but not quite. About the same as a stock pajero with a 55t motor or so. Tires gripped better than I thought, the extra weight really helps out. Low ground clearance limits playtime on the bigger rocks though, plan to drop the gearing a bit and see what i can do to tune the suspension a bit.

Some pics from the trial run - have a video coming as well.
