Over time, your clutchbell can become glazed or grooved which can lead to a slipping clutch or one with erratic engagement. A simple way to bring some life back to the clutch is to scuff the inside of the bell using sandpaper or a grinding drum on a Dremel tool. It is a good idea to check the bearings while you have the clutch apart, if they are a gold/ bronze color, missing the shields or have lots of play in the inner race, its time to change them. You’ll also want to check the clutch shoes, if there is a lip on the bottom of the shoe, or they are grooved, you’ll want to take some sandpaper to knock off the grooves or lip.

On this subject....what is a normal operating temp on a clutch? We are always temping our engines, but does the temp of the clutch tell us anything?

Setting a correct temp for a clutch would take alot of testing. At least I would assume so. The type of springs and clutches used all play a role.
How you drive and the vehicles gearing would be one of the larger factors.
From my experience, a blue clutch bell and bearings are a good indication of over heating.
