My entry for a drift buildoff. LOVE Porsche 959's and was fortunate enough to snag a 1/10 Nikko in nearly mint condition. Of course, I immediately tore it down... :)
Body is an odd size, WB is 8.5" and it's 7" wide, so it's short and stubby. Perfectly Porsche.
Building on a Hybrid TA chassis of some sort, dumped out some parts on the workbench and started to mock up. Gonna be some power in this one....lots of gearboxes here. Should have no issues with getting the tires spinning. :D

Im likeing this one! My favorite is the 911 from the same era as this one... the big bug eyed headlights with a bright yellow paintjob was my favorite

pics of what? lol....nothing but a pile of parts at the moment. got the chassis mocked up somewhat, it's going to be custom - WB is far too short for the stock chassis.

Well, Plan A was a fail, so moving on to plan B.
Plan A involved an FF01 and TA02 gearbox. Figured the dual motors would let me experiment with different gear ratios f/r, and let me overdrive the rear a bit. Turns out the FF01 gearbox will not fit under the sloped hood of the Porsche. Rear gearbox would have been mounted backwards to put the motor behind the wheels and open up more chassis space.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/Porsche959/07182010001sm.jpg
not gonna happen... :(
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/Porsche959/07182010002sm.jpg
...so Plan B.0 is to use standard TA running gear and more a more conventional layout. Even still, front shocks are a very tight fit under the hood, might need a plan B.1 to get the front to sit right. In ay case, started building up the gearboxes. Will be running a 1 way front, locked rear diff and speed tuned gearset.

I am not there to see the fit exactly, however, it does appear you may have to go with a more laid down shock system in front which would alow a shorter tower. The gearbox/motor issue is a whole different ballgame. I hear what you are sayin with the overdrivin the rear, but an alternative may need to be explored for something to work that is light, low cg, and still alot of power and streanth. I know you want the gearboxes separate, but what about a shaft drive like a tt-01 or AE TC4. The TC4 gearboxes are small and light, and very tough, can really handle brushless well, and it would free up alot of room, bulk, and weight. Just an observation.
I like that body, with the short WB, it will be a handful to drive, fun as heck, but a handful. Are you planning on a paintjob, or you leaving it as is?

Thought about it (TT, AE) but with having to cut 2.5 inches out of the chassis, lots of work there for both. the TA gearboxes are standalone units, so I can just build them up and then join them easily with a custom chassis. Plus, I already had the TA parts! :)
Will defintely get painted my friend, silver, red or white. Haven't decided yet.

Making some progress, finally starting to look like something. Gearboxes are done, and chassis is cut.

Driveshaft made...that was a project all in itself. Brake tubing with a dogbone cut in half and press fit in (and JBWelded)

thats really impresive, ive never seen anyone fab a driveshaft, most find off the shelf stuff to work or have it machined by some friend of a friend. kudos to you for that.
any chance you could go into detail on that or keep us up to date on that shaft in the long run?
now batt? where it go, how it you mount? along with the esc and rx, either my eye for size diferentiating is down the tubes or youll need a saddle pack of strange dimensions

Sure, first off I used a piece if 1/8" brake line tubing cut to length. I use a pipe cutter to keep it nice and square. Then, I used a dremel to bevel the inside edges a bit to make it easier to press fit in the dogbone.
Dug around in my parts box until I found a dogbone that looked like it would fit. Turns out I hacked up 2 - the first one was too narrow in diamter and slid right in. Second one was a little thicker and was just slightly too large to fit in the tubing. Perfect. Cut in half, beveled the edges and coated it with JBWeld. Then, just got a hammer, lined it up and tapped it into the brake tubing. You have to go slow or it will bend. Flipped it over, put the tubing in the vise and did the other side.
Hoping it will hold up, it's not meant for severe off road duty, but for a drifter shoudl be ok.
A stick pack fits in sideways just behind the steering servo. Just need to make a holder for it. Hump packs fits too, but is too tall for the upper deck.

Lookin good, and I was also wondering the same thing about the electronics fitting. I guess it is hard to really judge the actual dimentions from a laptop computer.
Oh, and as far as paint, I have always thought metallic blue and silver went nicely together. I looked the body over you have pictured, and invisioned a metallic blue from the bottom up to crest the fenders and roof. A wide silver stripe from the rear spoiler deck onto the roof, and down the hood following the hood line between the headlights, and ending with a curved end like this..).. between the headlights, right at the hood line. Something similar to the race car photo would look very nice as well in a multitude of color combos.

Wait till you see my clod....:) Blue and silver are my defacto colors for trucks. I should do what Wrenchhead does and come up with paint shceme for all my rides. Right now I am leaning towards silver for the 959. Defintely going to be a single color though.

matching paint scemes are awsome, makes buying paint easier and cheaper too since then you dont have 1/4 filled cans you cant do anything with but cant bring yourself to throw out

I did a paint scheme once and really liked it. They were the same but different and looked awsome on the shelf next to each other.

But this is what got my blue and silver going. It was my first real attempt at painting.

I still like having one paint scheme. It makes everything look uniformed. I do know that when I do get my stuff ready for the track, I do plan on experamenting with a few color choices, first off floresent yellow so I can see when night time rolls around. But I may end up going with my old paint scheme just because it is familiar.

Making a little more progress. Chassis is pretty much built, just need the valences front and rear. Then, tearing it all back down and painting it all black.
New upper deck in place
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/Porsche959/08012010001.jpg
New front shock tower brace/body mount. Note the 22t 550 truck motor stuffed in there. Should be plenty of torque to get the wheels spinning.
http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr84/dschlegel/Porsche959/08012010002.jpg
New rear body mount/shock tower brace. A bit of an odd size due to the body.

Stripped the stickers off the body, looks much better!! Not sold on the wheels, think I can find something better.

I think whats throwing the rims off is the tires have very little sidewall/the rims are made too big. for a race car, there's too much shine, but it has an interesting vibe to it.
OldSchoolRC
08-01-2010, 07:37 PM
Yeah, not sold on the wheels yet. 1.5's look too small, and vintage rims are too wide: 1.9 wheels with 0 offset are all that fits. After I took the pics, I tried out a set of black mesh rims - they look pretty good. Need to start on the bodywork next.

Messing with rims...liking the black! May or may not stay, who knows. Swapped the broken blue steering knuckles with a set of black ones I found and put some brake disks on....looks mean! Have since tore the body apart and started some styrene work.

Slow and steady....snuck away from the honey do list for a bit and fabbed up an exhaust. I was planning to bolt on a set of plastic cans from the tamiya detail kits - in fact, you can see where I started cutting out for them. ....but Porsche's usually have an oval exhaust...and it's more fun to make them anyway :) So I filled it back in and got some brass together.
Have to clearance the body to tuck them in a bit, and do a bit of trimming. Very close to getting this into the paintbooth.

Paint is on!! Pewter Pearl Metallic.....a mix of pearl black, silver, and pactra metallic sprinkles. Used enamels mixed up and airbrushed on, came out very well. May use this method more going forward. Little darker than I wanted, but keeps the sinister tone.

Got some more of the body detail done, and got the drift wheels and tires. Those T drift tires were a complete lady dog to get installed....will be buying them already mounted going forward.
Needs a bit of detail painting and decals yet, headlight buckets need to be installed, and have to finish the rear cowl vent. Toss in the electronics and she's ready to rock!

little change of pace...the drift buildoff is based off both chassis looks and design as well as bodywork. so, i snazzed up the chassis a bit.
Is it aluminum...or carbon?

Hammered finish...I like it. Why silver? Think it'll make sense once the chassis is fully reassembled.

Better not hover off...way too much time into this thing. :)
So close, I can smell the rubber burning.....er...um...the plastic melting :)
Chassis reassembled. All black except for the silver gearbox. Figured that's about where the motor sits in a 1:1 959, so it should be silver back there to match.

Ran AWESOME!! The exhaust came a little loose, and didn't notice till after I snapped the pics as you can see it's hanging down a bit, but other than that, ran smooth and solid. The T-drift tires are the best I've used so far and made it easy. The weather was not cooperating, and it was way dark and starting to rain, so got in the best pics I could outside. Really wish I had time to do something with the tailights, but it is what it is. I'm just happy to finish the BO on time!

And the music in the vid was Aerosmith, circa '78 for all the young'ins out there who have not been exposed to real rock and roll. Seems to have died back in the 80's. You know you are getting old when you see the top 10 Billboard list and don't recognize anyone on it. :)
Anyway, already took off the drift tires and put std. street tires on it....never was much of a drifter, though have to say it was more fun driving it than I thought. :) May make more of a flashy drifter later on another chassis.
