184 entries from 13 states. NY, NJ, PA, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, KY, OH, FL, AZ, and CA
Dennis Anderson’s Halloween R/C monster truck bash will go down as a milestone in R/C monster truck history. 184 entries from 13 states came to the world’s most famous full size monster truck shop for 2 days of non stop action.
The event is set up to mimic what you see when you attend monster truck events in stadiums across the country. There is a starting "Christmas tree" that has sensors for early starts (red lights), elapsed time, and MPH. For the Halloween themed event, plastic pumpkins were used for the turning poles and a 5 second penalty was given if the turning poles were missed.
No other event ties full size motor sports personalities with their R/C counterparts as well as the No Limit R/C events at Digger’s Dungeon. The ICON of monster trucks, and World Champion driver of Gravedigger, Dennis Anderson literally opens up his race shop, front yard and R/C racetrack to participants and spectators for these unique events.
Monster truck fans of all ages are given the opportunity to race their scaled down versions against drivers, crew chief’s and team managers of the full size trucks.
Race side by side against the crew of your favorite monster truck, talk about chassis design and suspension set ups with the fabricators of the full size trucks, or the ultimate dream, have Dennis Anderson announce your R/C freestyle over the sound system as hundreds of fans look on.
The Halloween bash started with a drivers meeting where the track layout and rules were discussed. The track was designed to be long enough to allow drivers to show off their trucks power, but still demand precision in the tight turns. The track also had 2 180 degree turns where many lead changes occurred. Director of operations, Bari Musawwir designed the track according to feedback from Dennis and the crew from the last event.
The time in between classes was broken up by monster truck trivia questions asked by Dennis himself. Literally hundreds of prizes were thrown out to the crowd.
The new novice cl**** which caters to less experienced racers ages 5-12 with brushed electric vehicles had 14 entries and was a huge success. These junior racers showed us all what makes RC so intriguing and rewarding. Everyone was pleasantly surprised to see that these little racers didn’t simply bring their box stock trucks, but came with decorated and detailed rides with names like the “Ghoul bus, and Pumpkin head”. HPI cleaned up with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes and the top 3 drivers were rewarded with batteries from SMC and Venom racing.
Brushed electric had 16 entries. (see results for top 3 below)
The Brushless electric class showed many newcomers to the hobby, that with current battery and motor technology, you don't need nitro to be blazing fast. This class saw several head to head battles between HPI’s John Schultz and David Pack. These 2 are very experienced drivers and every race went down to the wire.
The 4x4 Pro Modified Electric Monster Truck class featured 18 entries. These trucks feature the 4 link suspension and chassis design along with solid drive axels which makes them very similar to full size monster trucks. The finals pitted Bari Musawwir from Florida against Robbie Bunting and his “Bearfoot” Custom Tamiya Clod Buster from Virginia. Bari came out on top racing his “An Escalade” replica ECD Racing Tube Chassis Clod Buster for the victory.
Small Block had 32 entries.
The Biggest class was the 4x4 nitro big block which had 92 entries.
The final was John Schultz with his Bounty Hunter Savage X 4.6 against Michael Crawford in his Iron Outlaw Savage X 4.6. The race was very tight until the last turn where Michael made a minor bobble which allowed John to pull ahead and win. After the race, Dennis called Jimmy Creten, the owner of both Iron Outlaw and Bounty Hunter trucks to explain what had just happened. The crowd was amazed at the fact that 2 of the top dogs in the full size game were conducting an interview over the PA system at an RC race. What a treat! Thank you to Dennis and Jimmy for a truly memorable experience.
One of the most spectacular events of the weekend was the longjump. Racers were given one shot at driving their trucks at a 12 foot tall ramp which shot them over Gravedigger 14. This event combined the thrill of seeing your pride and joy sail through the North Carolina sky over the most iconic image in monster trucks, with the huge payoff of winning a $4,000 HPI Baja for the longest distance. The majority of trucks jumped from 25-35 feet, but only 3 went over 40 feet. Matt Hardin drove all the way from Ohio, and launched his Losi LST2 41'3" for 3rd place. John Schultz’ brushless E-savage sailed 45' 7" for a 2nd place finish, but the man of the hour was Gravedigger shop manager Henry Cross who skied his stock HPI Savage X 47’3” for the longest distance. Henry was weak in the knees and grinning from ear to ear when he accepted the reward, a tricked out HPI Baja 5B courtesy of HPI Baja Forum and their affiliated sponsors. (See racer page for more details on this incredible prize)
Freestyle was the most anticipated event of the weekend and saw 150 drivers compete for bragging rights, and the title of top freestyle driver at the home of Mr. Freestyle himself.
In the unfortunate event that they flipped over, drivers were allowed to marshall their truck one time. For many, the thrill of hearing Dennis Anderson call their freestyle performance combined with the fast paced musical sound track, proved to be too much as many drivers ended their 90 second allowance early. Many pulled off incredible stunts and miraculous saves. To achieve a top score, drivers had to open their performance big, negotiate several of the tracks obstacles in combination, use the entire allotted time and of course end it all with a huge finish that wowed the crowd.
3 drivers tied for 1st place. Bob Hall, Dustin Brown and Ryan Anderson. Bob Hall’s top freestyle performance combined with winning the small block class made him the overall event champion. Bob was handsomely rewarded with an HPI Baja 5B that even included a box of extra hop ups from HPI and Vertigo performance. Dustin Brown, Gravedigger crew chief, took home a Savage X 4.6 for his spectacular stunts. Ryan Anderson also scored a 27 with his Wyatt racing built pro modified electric truck which was sporting a brand new SMC lipo pack. Ryan took home a Tamiya Nitrage for pulling off some of the most spectacular stunts and saves that we have ever seen. Ryan, who already has his HPI Savage X dialed in just the way he likes it gave the Nitrage to his girlfriend Sierra so that she can compete in the powder puff class of the World Finals in May. Classy move dude!

The fact that 184 entries from 13 states came to an event on a non holiday weekend, just a few weeks before the holiday’s proves that the monster truck spirit is alive and well!!
Many, 1st time entrants and spectators who drove several hours to attend the bash, anticipating that Dennis and the whole slew of monster truck drivers that participated would simply show up, wave to the fans, sign a few autographs only to depart early. Not so, Dennis and his entire family were at trackside from sun up to well after sun down. Mr. monster truck himself spent his days at the event talking to fans, taking pictures, racing, and providing race by race commentary. It is very rare indeed to encounter an individual with so much raw talent, charisma, and a genuine passion to please his fans. The synergistic combination of Dennis' personality and expert race promotion and production of the No Limit team makes this one of the best events in R/C history.
