Yes, it's an ESC. The last IPC v7.1 was a big favorite of racers before the advent of the smaller Quantums. Even after the Quantum came out, I saw quite a few top pro racers (sponsored by LRP) who still ran the IPC. I, for one, can't wait for this one; I loved the feel of the old IPC.

What does the current limiting potentiometer do for you? I always thought that in order to get the most out of your motor you want the maximum current availible.

What does the current limiting potentiometer do for you? I always thought that in order to get the most out of your motor you want the maximum current availible.

In the "old days," before a lot of advanced ESC software and crazy-soft tires, racers relied on current limiters in effort to curb wheelspin and to make those comparatively low-capacity cells finish four minutes in mod. The IPC used to have these little plastic plugs to allow you to change profiles/limits. The v8.1, which is probably going to be a budget-priced speedo, has brought back the limiter, but in effort to save weight, it's an external plug-in, set, and unplug device. Anyone remember Novak's Pit Wizard?

We just got the v8.1 in today, and either the potentiometer thing was a snafu in the press release, or they changed it last minute -- 'cause it ain't in the box! Instead, the v8.1 has the replaceable programming chips we all know and love. With these, there are 25 possible "maps" to be had. As I suspected, this is an all-out racing ESC, rated to as few as 6 turns.
