What would you choose between for a bashing/thrashing truggy

a) OFNA Hyper ST

b) Tamiya Nitrage 5.2

I personally perfer the OFNA Hyper ST. The truck is durable and the shocks absorb just about everything you can throw at it. Steering in that truck is also pretty tight!

Thanks for the reply.

I have not played with nitro cars for quite some time now. I really find the Hyper ST RTR very atractive but I find that the clutch bell gear to spur gear combination will always get fouled by grit and small stones. I always find it unusual that manufacturers do not account for this esp for us thrashers who do not have tracks to run on but find any piece of waste ground to run on.

For this reason the Nitrage 5.2 seems a better choice as the meshing of gears is negated by the dog-bone joint between the motor and gearbox.

Unfortunately, the region I reside in, I have yet to find a Hobao or OFNA car in any of the shops to do some in depth comparison.

Tamiya build good models but I am aware they are restrictive in cutomising and not always that durable. I am a long-time Tamiya fan from the days of the Rough Rider.

Can anybody give me anymore advice?

Hey Etops,

Frank Masi has a very in-depth review of the Nitrage 5.2. Not sure if you've seen it or not, but here it is.

Tamiya's are restrictive in customizing? i have a ton of tamiyas, not one of them stock. I cannot say which would be more durable per se, but the tamiya looks like a tank.

i would pick the nitrage personally as well. I have had small stones get in the spur area on my 1/8 buggies and while nothing got tore up too bad, it does put a quick stop on the fun until you get in there and pop it out. And i like the uniqueness of the nitrage - it's not just another truggy, that's for sure.

just my .02!

Thanks for the reply! Sorry for my late response.

Yes, I have read Frank's review. It looks promising with a few upgrades. I have not found too much positive info on this truggy which has be disheartening otherwise I would have already purchased it!

I still have some reservations but will decide in the next two weeks whether I will take the plunge.

Even as returner to the hobby, I can see the shortfalls of the Nitrage but would like to hear more from those already owning and running the buggy. I know I only bash but I like the performance, robustness and reliability too!

Cheers

Hey OldSchoolRC

I have been a fan of Tamiya since my first Rough Rider back in the 80's!

They make lovely kits and they are a pleasure to build. I do understand their restrictions but once again I am not buying the truggy to race so it is fine that I am not getting the best.

I like the look of the Nitrage and the spurless gear design that seems trouble-free.

Cheers
