some pics of my cobra restoration...

the before pics are on my main post here - but i thought this car deserved it's own section. here are some pics of the progress.

the chassis is almost done. The car looked terrible with those 1/10 scale tires on it, so i filled the wheel wells with 1/9 scale kyosho sgp10 wheels that i have left over.

however, when i put them on the wheels stuck way out past the sides of the body. So after much contemplation and a little angst, i narrowed the suspension by bolting on a set of tamiya TA04 uprights in the rear, and shaving 1/2 inch of the front suspension arms and moving the hub carriers in. A couple of custom turnbuckles and steering links later and it's about 1 inch narrower all the way around and the wheels fit perfect!

Very Nice.
I would like to see more pics and details about the chassis.
What is the body from?

The chassis and body were sold together as a scale series krom kyosho back in the 80's i believe. There were a few cars in the series, and you see these cobra's pop up occaisionally. The chassis is very unique - there are some pics on my other post and more coming...the chassis is redone, electrified, and already out for a drive. i just have to get the picures out here.

The body is beat but i should be able to at least make it presentable. Thankfully all the chrome body parts are there and in decent shape. It is a VERY cool body with a ton of potential.

some pics of the finshed chassis. i had to locate the electronics in weird spots due to the chassis layout and the way the body fits on. to make room for the interior, i had to mount the receiver way in the back. You can see the difference in width compared to the stock parts car i picked up.

i took it out for a spin and it is suprisingly quick with the stock motor. with a light chassis, efficient tranny and those big tires in the back, acceleration is not an issue. handling is also pretty good for a spring only suspension. i might see if i can build up the parts car with a more powerful motor just for fun...

on to the body!!

Getting some body work done!

To start with, the original paint had a few noticable runs and drips, and the body was cracked badly in 4 places in the front as well.

I matched the paint as best as possible, but it was still slightly off once it dried. there's only 1 spot where you can really see the difference, and the front looks a lot better.

I took the soft side of some "industrial strength" sticky back velcro and used the pieces to stick the body back together. The adhesive in the back was super strong and holds the body together, and the soft velco is thick and flexible - it worked really, really well, and the front is a lot more solid than it looks. From more then a foot or two, you can't tell it used to be mangled.

I got a little painting done in the interior as well. Not much but it's a start. The headless guy still kinda freaks me out.

Cool project! I like how the Super-Ten wheels look with the Cobra body.

haven't been able to get much done lately, but the interior is coming along rather well...nothing too fancy though. just enough to look decent as it's cooking around.

A little front end detail goes a long way towards hiding the damage. touched up the chrome and painted the turn signals. progress.....

I nearly bought a Cobra replica - with a REAL (Detroit V8) engine in, when I was bored, in Africa!!
To say I'm a fan on Cobras is an understatement!
WHERE DID YOU GET THE LIGHTS FROM? !!
I've found the FG Modellsport ones are great, but a bit big.

When it's finished, let's see some photos! Don't forget the white stripes of course!!

Sorry guys, never saw the replies. No, it's not finished, on the shelf for the time being still, though I'm going to finish it off as soon as I'm done with the SX4 experiment. I did get some inspirational work done on my right leg though :)
